In my opinion this is Wake Forest's biggest game of the season. This is a game where the Deacs are legitimately the better team and should have a decent home court advantage. Yes, the Deacs have struggled mightily in the previous two games, but Virginia Tech has also dropped seven in a row. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

Analyzing each team's strengths and weaknesses to get you prepared for the first round of the ACC Tournament.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons enter the ACC Tournament having lost consecutive games by at least 18 points. That's probably misleading, however, as they lost to the Duke Blue Devils by 43 points on Wednesday. The good news for Wake Forest fans is that they are facing a Virginia Tech team who has lost seven straight games and won just two ACC games all season. What will happen when the team's square off on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.? Let's take a look at each team's strengths and weaknesses.

Wake Forest's Advantages

Size/Rebounding

Wake Forest has the 34th best effective height in the country, which is a metric that considers height of each player and number of minutes played. Virginia Tech, on the other hand, is ranked 251st. Devin Thomas is 6'9", Dinos Mitoglou is 6'10", Darius Leonard is 6'9", Aaron Rountree is 6'8", and Greg McClinton is 6'7". Meanwhile, Virginia Tech has just one player - Satchel Pierce, who is taller than 6'8". Pierce also plays only 14 minutes per contest. The Hokies may hustle, but they are 311th nationally in offensive rebounding percentage and 344th in defensive rebounding percentage. Ultimately, size matters. Wake looks to shoot the three ball, but I believe their game plan should be centered about feeding Devin Thomas on the interior and utilizing their size to create second chance opportunities. It may not be beautiful, but it will be effective.

Getting to the Foul Line

The Deacs are 58th nationally in free throw rate. While the Hokies have a good defensive free throw rate, they do a poor job of getting to the line themselves. This can be attributed to their lack of size. What's perhaps even more shocking to Wake Forest fans is that Virginia Tech is somehow worse than Wake Forest at free throws. They shoot 63.4% while Wake shoots 63.5%. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that's not statistically significant. Still, I'll take it.

Virginia Tech's Advantages

Three Point Shooting

Virginia Tech does not do much well, but they can make it rain from the outside. The Hokies shoot 39.3% from deep, which is 18th in the country. Adam Smith, a.k.a. the Invisible Hand, is an assassin from deep and shoots 43%. Freshman Justin Bibbs has shot 44% from outside this season. They also have Ahmed HIll and Malik Mueller, who have each made at least 37% of their threes. Warning: do not play zone against this team. Syracuse did, and look at what happened to them! I'll see my way out.

If Virginia Tech is going to be successful in this contest, then they are going to need to make threes. This, has allowed them to have an offensive efficiency of 103.8 points/100 possessions. That is roughly equivalent to Wake's offense, but the teams reach that number in dramatically different ways.

Turnovers

The Hokies do a nice job of taking care of the rock. Adam Smith has the 14th best turnover rate in the country, and Devin Wilson has better than a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio. The Deacs are below average at forcing turnovers, so I anticipate Tech being able to hold onto the ball in this one. The Hokies do get blocked a lot, so Wake could potentially force quasi turnovers if they block shots that lead to an outlet pass or at least possession of the ball. Wake has one of the worst offensive steal rates in the country, but fortunately Virginia Tech is awful at forcing steals, so that should limit Virginia Tech's transition opportunities.

On paper, Wake Forest should be able to pull away late and win this one. They do not have as many capable shooters as Virginia Tech, but they do have capable perimeter shooters in Greek Deac, Mitchell Wilbekin, Cornelius Hudson, and Darius Leonard. The battle on the glass and interior play should carry them in this one, but it's important not to panic if the Hokies hit early threes. That is one of our team's biggest problems. They tend to make the mistake of rushing a shot early in a possession and always trying to tie the game in one play.

Who are you all picking to win this one?

The winner of this game will face Miami on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. As always, go Deacs!

For a program long viewed (nationally) as limited due to various [debatable] constraints, the hiring of Buzz Williams has proven to be a Pulp Fiction-esque shot of adrenaline to a beleaguered fan base.

I find this first round matchup extremely interesting. Two schools with big name first year head coaches, each looking to revive programs that experienced varying levels of success during the Oughts. I’m sure Wake fans feel the same as Tech fans do: Regardless of the outcome of this week’s ACC Tournament, this season has served as a stepping stone for things to come. Few (if any) in Blacksburg believed this team was poised for immediate success in Year One; with that being said, it was important that this young group develop as the season progressed, if only to instill confidence that brighter days were ahead. Despite their record, this team has displayed a ton of promise. More importantly, they have illustrated that they have bought into what Buzz and his staff are selling, and that they are full invested in collectively working toward building this program into a national power. As a fan, it’s hard not to get behind that.

What do you believe is Virginia Tech's biggest advantage in this contest?

Adam Smith is this team’s go-to scoring threat, and he has proven that he has the ability to both keep games close and to close them out. However, I think what makes this team dangerous is the quantity of capable scorers they have at their disposal. In addition to leading scorers Justin Bibbs and Smith, guys like Ahmed Hill, Jalen Hudson, Malik Mueller and Devin Wilson have shown that they can score in double-figures on any given night. Hill and Mueller are dangerous from the corner, while Jalen Hudson has proven to be a dynamic slasher and an incredibly talented finisher in traffic. When Wilson is at his best, he is taking the ball to the hoop with purpose, opening up the pick-and-roll and drive-and-kick games. Where some teams rely almost too heavily on one guy, this team has a number of dangerous players. The issue is that, outside of Smith, you never know what you’re going to get.

What do you believe is Virginia Tech's biggest disadvantage in this game?

Rather than beat a dead horse and discuss the Hokies’ Lollipop Guild of a Starting 5, I’ll focus on another area of weakness: This team has no one to lean on when the going gets tough. I’m not talking about an alpha dog scorer, but rather a heady ball handler that you want controlling the pace of play from start-to-finish. While Buzz’s system doesn’t necessarily require a primary ball-handler up top, the offense has been quite successful when guys like Devin Wilson and Jalen Hudson have broken down defenses and found the open man.

Their late collapse on the road against Syracuse was a perfect example of how badly this team needs a vocal leader to lean on under duress. As the Orange pressed the Hokies down the stretch, Tech wilted under the pressure. Multiple players tried to take control of the press break, but none of them are elite ball handlers or heady passers. As such, the Hokies continued to throw the ball away or dribble themselves into traps, allowing the Orange to storm back and win at the buzzer.

I’m about to date myself: I remember watching Chris Paul warm-up at Cassell Coliseum in 2005 before the Deacs and Hokies square off. What struck me was how effortlessly he went through his pre-game dribbling routine, as though the ball was an extension of his own body. It was magical to watch. When I watch this Hokies team, I want nothing more than to see a Chris Paul clone step in one day, settle everything down, and be that guy you can count on when the going gets tough. I know that Paul is a once-in-a-lifetime talent, but hey, a man can dream.

While Devin Wilson is arguably the most capable player currently on the roster, he is also the biggest enigma of the group. While he has had some incredibly successful games distributing the basketball, he has struggled to find any consistency. He looked like a virtuoso against Duke, dishing out 11 assists while his teammates rained threes on the Blue Devils. At home against Miami on Sunday, Wilson dribbled the ball off his leg on consecutive possessions in the first three minutes and ended up watching half of the game from the bench. If this game is tight down the stretch, it will important to watch how Buzz deploys his guards and who steps up to take control on a big stage.

Which Virginia Tech player is the biggest x-factor in this game?

I think the simple answer is Justin Bibbs. Prior to suffering a concussion midway through the season, Bibbs was the Hokies’ most dynamic scorer. Since his return, we have seen up-and-down performances from Bibbs (mostly down), and continue to openly question whether or not he has settled back in to the flow of the game. The ACC tournament would be the perfect time for him to re-discover his earlier form.

An interesting guy to watch is freshman center Satchel Pierce. Big Satch has looked like a freshman at times this season, where the game looks like it’s moving too fast for him. At the same time, he has played tough against elite talent and has flashing glimpses of the player he could become down the road. He is a long way away from taking over a game, but if he can stay out of foul trouble and score a couple of early buckets, it would go a long way towards freeing up the wing players to do some damage on Tuesday afternoon.

What's your prediction for the game?

It’s funny. As bad as the Hokies have played down the stretch (losers of seven straight, including three by 20+ points), it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see them win a game or two this week. The reason is simple: Buzz Williams has proven that he can coach up his team, and this team has proven that they will respond to it. Facing a series of back-to-backs, I think that a young team would benefit from the tournament schedule, if only because they may be too young and jaded to worry about the big stage. With that being said, their performance over the weekend against Miami (at home, on Senior Day) looked more like a team ready to turn the page on this season. I hope I’m wrong, but I’ll give Wake the edge, 69-65.

Wake has been horrendous in each of its past two games. What do the numbers say heading into the ACC Tournament?

The ACC Tournament bracket is officially set, and the #11 seed Wake Forest Demon Deacons are set to play the #14 seed Virginia Tech Hokies on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum. Now that the bracket is set, basketball statistician Ken Pomeroy has released his log5. This output gives the odds of each team in a given tournament advancing to a certain round and also winning a certain round. It takes into account all possible scenarios, so for example Duke's odds of winning its quarterfinals matchup are different based on whether they are facing N.C. State or Pittsburgh. This arithmetic takes the probability of each team advancing to face Duke, and Duke's odds of winning each respective game into account. Now that that's out of the way, what do the numbers say about our Demon Deacons?

Spoiler alert: obligatory Dumb & Dumber reference.

Odds of Beating Virginia Tech: 72.6%

Mr. Pomeroy gives the Deacs about a 3 in 4 chance of beating the Hokies in the first round. Wake Forest should dominate the glass in this one. The biggest threat that the Hokies have is that they shoot 39.3% from deep, which is 18th in the nation. Wake fans are disgruntled by their past two performances, and I certainly agree with them, but Tech has lost its last seven performances. On Saturday they lost by 21 at home to Miami and last Monday they lost to Boston College at home by seven.

Odds of Beating Miami: 37% (27% if you factor in them having to get to this game first)

Miami is set to host the winner of Wake's game on Wednesday night around 9:30. If Wake advances to that game, then Ken Pom gives the Deacs about a 37% chance to beat the Hurricanes. Wake would essentially have a home court advantage in this one, Miami is playing for its NCAA Tournament lives, however, while Wake Forest has nothing tangible to play for. The Deacs beat Miami earlier on in the season, but motivation could be significant in this one.

Odds of Beating Notre Dame 19.6% (5.3% if you factor in having to get to this game first)

I could go #FactsOnly in this paragraph and mention that Wake Forest has never lost to Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament and therefore we should win, but I know our readers are much smarter than that. Three weeks ago, Wake Forest traveled to South Bend and lost 88-75. I maintain that Notre Dame's 4-out offense is a bad matchup for Wake Forest on the defensive end, but this set of players did allow Devin Thomas to finish with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Last year there was a vocal contingency of Wake Forest support in their game against Notre Dame, and that was despite the coaching situation. If Wake Forest makes the quarterfinals against Notre Dame, then you can bet Wake will have a lot of fan support.

Odds of Reaching the Finals: 0.6%

If Wake Forest manages to sneak by Notre Dame, then they will have the honor of playing either Duke, North Carolina State or Pittsburgh. Let's beat real, they'll probably be playing the Blue Devils. To be more real, it's highly unlikely Wake will even play in this game, though they do have a 5.3% chance. Of course Wake supposedly had a 6.1% chance to win at Cameron last Wednesday and we all know how that one turned out.

Odds of Winning the Tournament: .07%

That's .07%, not 7 percent, not even 7/10th's of a percent, so not good. The good news is that Duke would already be eliminated at this point. The bad news is that Wake would probably be playing either Virginia, Louisville or North Carolina. But hey, maybe Boston College will continue this winning streak and we'll have a classic #rivalry game in the ACC Final?!? Wake is currently +50,000 (500/1) according to Vegas.

Editor's Note: As a commenter correctly points out below, 500:1 is actually .2%, meaning the odds are BETTER than the .07%. Go on.

The regular season is over and the bracket is officially set. Find out when your favorite team is playing and how to watch.

The ACC regular season came to a close yesterday in an unfortunate way for our Demon Deacons, but they have at least one (hopefully more) games to play this season. The Deacs will open conference tournament play on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. when they host Virginia Tech, who is coming off a 21 point home loss to Miami. We'll have more coverage on that game later, but for now, take a look at the bracket. The winner of the Wake/VT game will play Miami on Wednesday night at 9 p.m.

A few notes, all games in bold are games in which Wake Forest could play in. Additionally, for the times, I would add 30 minutes to the start time of each 2nd game in a given session. Those games are games scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. I would anticipate those being much closer to 2:30 and 9:30.
