The senior captain gets the honors for his work against Utah State

The votes are in, and this week’s Deac of the Week is RS senior linebacker and team captain, Grant Dawson. Congratulations!

Dawson finished with 59% of votes cast. He had a big game, tying for second in total and solo tackles by hunting the ball down all over the field on defense and special teams. He also combined with Boogie Basham to produce the only defensive score of the game on a safety.

Who gets your vote as Deac of the Week?

Wake’s win over Utah State was certainly a team effort. The Deacs had three rushers and three receivers with at least 50 yards apiece, and nine different defenders registered a TFL. You can see by the list of honorable mentions how hard it was to trim this list down to three. With that said, here are your nominees for Deac of the Week:

Grant Dawson

This week, Dawson was second on the team with 6 tackles (5 solo). He also had the only defensive points for the Deacs, when he paired with Boogie Basham for a safety that put Wake up 19-0.

Arkeem Byrd

In just his third game for the Deacs, redshirt freshman Arkeem Byrd was fed the ball often. He took advantage and broke out for 120 yards on 19 carries (6.3 ypc), including a 59 yard touchdown run. Byrd also caught one pass for 4 yards. Byrd has shown great speed so far this year, and it’s very exciting to see him contributing to what was already a much-improved backfield for the Deacs.

Hines had a relatively quiet start to the season, totaling just 47 yards in the first two games against Presby and BC. The junior WR bounced back and then some against Utah State, catching five passes for a career-high 129 yards. That included four receptions of least 20 yards, with Hines doing a lot of the work after the catch.

Will Wake avenge its 2014 loss?

After a successful business trip to Boston last week, the Deacs are back home welcoming Utah State to town.

Utah State Aggies: Win-Loss Records

All-Time: 525–517–31 (.504)

Past Decade: 59-68 (.465)

Last Season: 3-9

This Season: 1-1

Series History

Utah State is undefeated against Wake Forest, after beating the Deacs 36-24 in 2014 in the only prior matchup between these teams.

Wake went up 7-0 in the first quarter when Josh Bush returned an interception 72 yards for a score. Unfortunately, the Deacs then gave up 29 unanswered points before halftime. The loss contributed to the Deacs going 2-2 in the non-conference schedule in 2014, before losing their first six straight ACC games en route to a 3-9 finish (with the sole conference win being the legendary 6-3 OT win against VT).

Trends and Significance

USU is trying to work their way back to the glory years they experienced from 2012-2014, when they went 30-11 and were briefly nationally-ranked. Since then, they’ve gone 6-7 and 3-9. They’ve started this year 1-1 with a loss to a Power 5 team in Wisconsin followed by a blowout of Idaho State before this week’s test against the Deacs.

That might give Aggies fans a sense of deja vu - in 2014, the Aggies lost big in week 1 to Tennessee then easily handled Idaho State before facing Wake. The home win over the Deacs gave Utah State its only Power 5 win of the year and helped spark the team to a 10-4 record. USU kicks off its conference schedule next week, and this game is the difference between heading into conference play 2-1 with a win over a P5 opponent or 1-2.

Meanwhile, for the Deacs this one of a few true “should win” matchups on the schedule. With such a narrow path to bowl eligibility, this is the kind of game Wake can’t afford to give away. The good news is, I doubt the team will be taking this game for granted. The 2014 matchup was John Wolford’s third game as a Deac, and he had a rough night. It was also the third game played at Wake for guys like Cam Serigne, Wendell Dunn, Grant Dawson, Duke Ejiofor, and Zeek Rodney - and the third game coached by Dave Clawson after replacing Jim Grobe.

In all honesty, the 2014 Wake squad was totally outplayed by Utah State. Wolford threw for 2 TDs and 2 INTs (including a pick 6) on 40% passing while taking six sacks. The team rushed for a total of -25 yards, with Isaiah Robinson ending up as the only Deac with positive yards on the ground (9 rushes for 13 yards, 1.4 ypc). On the other side of the ball, the defense gave up 29 unanswered points to close the first half and ultimately surrended almost 400 yards of offense. Wake also committed 10 penalties for over 100 yards.

All in all, I suspect Coach Clawson and the senior leaders on the team have plenty of motivation not to overlook this game; hopefully that translates into a second consecutive 3-0 start for Wake. Let’s get some revenge and keep this season rolling. Go Deacs!

After taking down Gardner-Webb in the home opener, the Deacs travel to Utah to take on a talented Aggie squad.

Opponent: Utah State Aggies

Time: 7:00 PM EST

TV: CBS Sports Network

Location: Logan, Utah - Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium

Head Coach: Matt Wells (2nd season, 10-6 overall)

Series History: First meeting

2013 Record: 9-5 (7-1 in conference, won the Poinsettia Bowl)

Both teams enter their third week of play with an even 1-1 record. The Aggies were blown out by the Volunteers of Tennessee in Knoxville, while we all know about the Deacons' loss in Louisiana. John Wolford and the offense finally came alive last weekend against Gardner-Webb, but Wake is officially out of Division I-AA teams to play for the rest of the season. A lot of young players will need to grow up quickly to have a chance at upending the Aggies.

Offense

Taking the helm on offense is senior quarterback Chuckie Keeton, who returns after suffering an injury last season. Before going down, he was putting up pretty impressive numbers. He completed nearly 70% of his passes and maintained a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 9:1. There's no doubt that Keeton can make plays with the ball in his hand, what's questionable is his supporting cast.

The team lost a 1,200 yard rusher in Joey DeMartino and will have to make up the the 51 catches and 832 yards that Travis Reynolds contributed last season. Out of six players who got time on the offensive line in 2013, five need to be replaced. For an offense that was 50th in the nation in scoring last year, all of the inexperience does not bode well.

Supporting Keeton will be running back Joe Hill and receivers Brandon Swindall and Ronald Butler. Hill also went down with an injury last year, while Swindall and Butler put up decent numbers as lower guys on the depth chart.

Defense

The Aggie offense was certainly respectable last season, but defense is where the team really shined. They were seventh in the nation in the scoring in 2013 and return several key playmakers. In the linebacking corps, outside starters Kyler Fackrell and Nick Vigil return, while Zach Vigil and Travis McMillian man the middle. This quartet will be crucial if the Aggies hope to match the 2.8 yards per rush they allowed a year ago.

In 2013, what the secondary lacked in coverage skills, it made up for in run defense. The back four was incredibly active and could be a hole in this year's squad. Three of the four starters are gone, so some sort of regression is expected. The lone returning player is senior safety Brian Suite, who had a nice campaign in which he compiled 57 tackles and five interceptions.

Against Tennessee the secondary showed its youth, allowing the Volunteers to cruise to 38 points on three passing scores. Even against a much weaker Idaho State team, the Aggies still allowed 20 points (while scoring 40 of their own). Young John Wolford may be the perfect dose of medicine to fix their defensive woes, but this doesn't appear to be as strong of a unit as in previous years.

Special Teams

Definitely a plus for the Aggies on special teams. Last week talented returner JoJo Natson ripped off a 52-yard return for a score. Punter Jaron Bentrude was also solid, averaging over 40 yards on seven punts. Kicker Nick Diaz looks decent in short yardage situations, but he has only taken two attempts on the year, with the longest going for 31 yards.

Prediction

Wake's defense should keep the score in respectable range, but I don't think Wolford is ready for this test on the road yet. I'll take the Aggies by a final tally of 21-10.

There were no changes to the depth chart this week. The only news is that Coach Clawson stated he'd like to redshirt Tyree Harris, who played last season as a true freshman. This would explain why Harris has yet to play this season.

What did SB Nation's Ben Phillips have to say about this year's Utah State team?

BSD: Chuckie Keeton is back, but has completed just 47% of his passes and thrown two interceptions. Did you expect him to struggle this much early on in the season?

A: Not at all. As I'm sure you've heard by now, there was a campaign to set him up as a Heisman candidate, and he was listed as a pre-season Heisman possible. After the success he had last year in the first half of the season, I don't think anyone expected him to have this hard of a time coming back. It can't all be blamed on him, though; the receivers have dropped multiple passes, the running backs (especially Joe Hill) have struggled to pull any heat off of him, and the offensive line has struggled to protect him. He seemed to be coming into his own more towards the end of the Idaho State game last week, and I expect to see him continue to improve dramatically as the season progresses.

Utah State's defense was supposed to be a strength of this year's team, but allowed 37 points to Tennessee and 20 to Idaho State. Is this concerning to Utah State fans?

A: Somewhat. We had anticipated a better showing, but all things considered, the defense has still done a reasonable job. Against Tennessee, they were on the field far more often than they should have been due to the offense's ineptitude, and were able to contain Tennessee for the most part. Against a surprisingly talented Idaho State team, they did enough to check off a 20 point win. I'd have been more comfortable with 30+, but for the moment, I'll just be grateful for the W.

BSD: What do you think the ceiling is for this year's Utah State team?

A: I still think a MWC championship is on the table if the offense can figure it's stuff out quickly. I've seen overall improvement from the team, and if that improvement continues, there's a ton of potential in Logan this year.

BSD: Fill in the blank. Utah State will win this game if______.

A: ...if they eliminate stupid errors. A fumble per game is inexcusable, particularly on kickoff returns. Three interceptions from Keeton in two games is unheard of. Get rid of these, and I don't foresee a huge obstacle in this game.

BSD: Finally a quick prediction for this one.

A: To be honest, given what I've seen of Wake's offense so far, I'm not too worried about this one. I don't expect more than 14 points from WF, and I don't expect less than 30 from the Aggies (even if a few of those come from the defense). I'll say USU wins the home game 31-13.

Many thanks to Ben for taking the time to answer our questions.
