Wake Forest to Play in 2022 Jamaica Classic

The Deacs are headed to Jamaica

NCAA Basketball: Wake Forest at Clemson Dawson Powers-USA TODAY Sports

The Jamaica Classic has officially announced its lineup for the 2022 Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic, and Wake Forest will be one of the 8 teams competing this season.

The Deacs were scheduled to make the trip in 2020 but had to cancel due to the pandemic, so it’s great that the team in now getting the opportunity to head to Montego Bay to play some basketball. Wake will take on the La Salle Explorers on November 18th in the opening round and then will play either Georgetown or Loyola Marymount on November 20th in the second round depending on the results.

Looking at the tournament field, frankly, I see no reason why the Deacs shouldn’t dominate win this thing. Obviously, teams aren’t going to be exactly the same as last season, but based on the 2021-22 season, Wake Forest is obviously the best team in the event. In fact, Wake Forest is the only team in the tournament that finished in the top 100 in KenPom last season and is 1 of 2 teams with a winning record in Division I last season.

2021-22 Season

Team Record KenPom
Team Record KenPom
Wake Forest 25-10 35
Utah Valley 20-12 119
Georgetown 6-25 175
Loyola Marymount 11-18 203
La Salle 11-19 229
Morgan State 13-15 292
Green Bay 5-25 343
Queens (DII) 30-4 -

That being said, being the best team on paper and actually going out and proving it on the court are two very different things, and overlooking an opponent is pretty much the easiest way to lose a game. In any event, this should be a great experience for the players and hopefully they can bring home a trophy.

Go Deacs!
