2019 Record: 8-5 (5-3, #2 in Coastal)
Notable Departures: CB Reggie Floyd, WR Damon Hazelton, TE Dalton Keene, CB Caleb Farley
Notable Returns: CB Jermaine Waller, OT Christian Darrisaw, WR Tayvion Robinson, TE James Mitchell
So before losing Caleb Farley, I would’ve argued this was a top 5 starting CB duo. Now with Farley heading to the draft, that is a hole that needs to be fixed as they already have a VERY subpar pass rush. Not just against Wake I have serious questions of how this team is going to hold up against most of the ACC if they don’t target Waller.
On the flip side, their offense should be very, very good. Hendon Hooker should be much better with an improved OL and returning/improving WRs. Raheem Blackshear, Tre Turner, Tayvion Robinson, and James Mitchell should all end up as very productive players all year and will be a nightmare to handle for any and all defenses. You’re going to have to pressure Hooker, or at the very least take away boundary throws and have him utilize the middle of the field, where he struggled a lot last year. However, Hooker is able to beat you with his feet easily, so it adds another layer that defenses have to deal with.
This is a matchup that screams fireworks as Wake should have fun picking apart this defense(if they stay healthy) while Virginia Tech all year should be a very fun offense to watch but an annoying defense to face.
What do you guys think about this matchup? Will Wake get their revenge from last year? Will this fire powered offense be too much for Wake? Sound off in the comments.
As always,
Go Deacs.
