Basketball is back in the form of the annual The Basketball Tournament, and not only is it back, but it’s back with Demon Deacons playing!
This year the tournament features 24 teams, with two teams featuring Wake Forest alumni.
L.D. Williams is suiting up for BigX, a team of mostly Big Ten alumni (plus LD). In Saturday’s first round game, BigX defeated D2 (a team made up of former Division 2 players) 79-74 to advance to the second round. In the win, LD had 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Wake Forest alum Chris Paul is the general manager of Team CP3, which features Deacon alums Codi Miller-McIntyre, C.J. Harris, David Weaver, and Aaron Rountree III. In Saturday’s first round game, Team CP3 came back from a large second half deficit to defeat Primetime Players 76-74. The game was won on a walk-off dunk by C.J. Harris, which came off of an assist by fellow Deacon Codi Miller-McIntyre after a steal.
Harris had 12 points, 2 assists, a rebound, and a block. Miller-McIntyre had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Weaver had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Rountree had 2 points, 7 rebounds, and an assist.
Big X, the 9th seed, takes on the 8th seed Red Scare—the Dayton alumni team—on Wednesday at 2pm Eastern on ESPN.
Team CP3, the 13th seed, takes on the 4th seed Golden Eagles—the Marquette alumni team—tonight at 7pm Eastern on ESPN.
Best of luck to these Deacs in The Basketball Tournament! If you’re like me and have been starved for live basketball, these games are a must watch, and even more so when they feature some of my favorite Deacs!
