Wake Forest Women Take Down Tar Heels 57-54, Win Fourth Straight

The Wake Forest Women start conference play 1-0

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: MAR 06 ACC Women’s Tournament - Wake Forest v Florida State

The Wake Forest Women’s team started the ACC schedule off on the right foot, beating the North Carolina Tar Heels 57-54 to improve to 4-1 on the season. It was the team’s fourth straight win and third straight win over the Heels, dating back to last season.

Wake got off to a very slow start in this one, managing just 7 points on 3-12 shooting in the 1st quarter. Those struggles continued into the 2nd, and the Deacs finished the half down 19-25 shooting just 23% from the floor. Thankfully, the Deacs got things going in the 2nd half—by the end of the 3rd quarter, Wake had cut the Tar Heel lead to just 2 points, 36-38. A well timed 18-5 run in the 4th quarter gave the Deacs the lead and they were able to hold off a late Carolina push to win the game 57-54.

Senior Gina Conti led the way for the Deacs with 16 points on 5-10 shooting, 3 assists and 3 steals. Senior Ivana Raca, who was scoreless in the first half, finished the game with a double-double, scoring 14 points on 6-15 shooting and grabbing 12 rebounds. Junior Christina Morra, the third Deac to score in double figures, finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

It’s always a great day when the Deacs take down the Tar Heels. Wake Forest has a chance to build on the win streak this Sunday against Norfolk State at 12pm. They will play UNC again on December 20th for a chance at 4 in a row over the Heels. I certainly won’t bet against them.
