Deac of the Week: Jamie Newman

The QB gets the honors for Week 4 against Elon

NCAA Football: Elon University at Wake Forest Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The votes are in, and the Deac of the Week for Week 4 vs. Elon is Jamie Newman. Congratulations to Jamie!

Newman got 60% of the votes this week, earning him DOTW for the second time this season (the first was against Utah State in Week 1). Newman completed 77% of his passes (27 for 35) for 351 yards and 5 touchdowns, before heading to the sideline about halfway through the third quarter to give Michael Kern some game reps. That was only the third time in school history the Deacs have had a passer throw for 5 touchdowns (Riley Skinner, John Wolford).

Despite the gaudy passing numbers, my favorite play Newman made might be this 1 yard gain:

That’s a direct hit from an unblocked linebacker listed at just over 220lbs. I have to think #50 heard an earful about that play in film review this week.

Even with an FCS opponent, Newman’s performance was noticed:

Let’s close with a twofer - the ACC Digital Network named Jamie Newman the top performer of the week, and put together a highlight package. Enjoy the highlights, and go Deacs!
