Elon Vs. Wake Forest: Things to Know

After last weeks late-game thriller (It should have never been that close in the 4th) Wake gets an extra day of rest before they face the Elon Phoenix out of the FCS. Here are some things to know about Elon before Saturday’s noon kickoff at BB&T Field in Winston Salem.

1. This is NOT a game to be taken lightly

Wake comes into this game as a HEAVY favorite (-27.5), but still, we need to not lose focus and come to play against one of the better teams in the FCS. Both the team and we as fans need to not look past this game to potentially being ranked following wins the next two weeks but focus on the game at hand.

2. The passing game

Elon so far has played three games and their junior quarterback, Davis Cheek from Butler HS in Matthews, NC, has played well. He has thrown for 662 yards and 7 touchdowns in these games while not turning the ball over once. He has completed about 60% of the passes he has thrown. He doesn’t run the ball very well so be on the lookout for the defense to attack him early in the backfield.,

3. The running game

So far this year Elon has had 2 backs over 100 yards for the season in three decent games. They have scored 6 times while running the ball so look for the defensive backs to watch carefully and make wise decisions if they decide to run an RPO.

4. Defense

So far this year, the Phoenix has given up 72 points. That is a mediocre number considering the teams that they have played so far. They do not force many turnovers, with 2 INT and 1 FR in 3 games, so be on the lookout for Wake to attack early in the game and unlike the Carolina game, stay on the gas in the second half.

Hope to see everyone out this week during homecoming cheering on the Deacs who will hopefully be 4-0 going into the game next week at Boston College.

Go Deacs!
