The Deacs are 3-0 and have just 1 more game before starting conference play against Boston College. But before that, they will have to take care of the Elon Phoenix at BB&T Field this Saturday at noon (ugh). While there is a very good chance that Wake Forest will win this game pretty easily, it is never wise to underestimate an opponent (looking at you, Georgia Tech). With that in mind, lets check out the Phoenix players to watch.
Offense: Davis Cheek | Jr. QB | #17
Through 3 games so far this season, Cheek has complete 60% of his passes for 662 yards, 7 TDs and 0 interceptions. In his last game against Richmond, he threw for 234 yards and a whopping 5 touchdowns, so you know he will be coming into Winston Salem with plenty of confidence. Now, obviously Cheek is not going to be as good as a Jordan Love or a Trevor Lawrence, but that doesn’t mean that the defense should relax and not be focused. After all, it was just last year that Tom Flacco threw for 345 yards and 3 touchdowns in a game where Towson was tied with the Deacs 14-14 going into the 2nd quarter.
Defense: Stephen Copeland | RS Jr. LB | #56
In the first 3 games of the season for the Phoenix, Copeland has recorded 20 total tackles and 1 sack. He also recorded a season high 10 tackles in Elon’s 35-28 win over the Citadel (looking at you again GT). I don’t anticipate the Wake Forest offense having any trouble on Saturday, but Copeland could make a couple of plays using his speed on those slow zone read style plays.
