The Deacs will take on the College of Charleston Cougars in the first round on November 28th. The Cougars finished last season with a 24-9 record (12-6 in CAA) and 123rd in Kenpom (for comparison, Wake finished at 174). The Cougars are also getting back last season’s leading scorer, Grant Riller, who averaged 22 points and 4 assists while shooting 54% from the floor a season ago.
Regardless of whether the Deacs win or lose, they will play either Providence or Long Beach State in their 2nd game on November 29th.
Providence finished last season at 18-16 (7-11 in Big East) and 79th in Kenpom. The Friars were one of the younger teams in the NCAA last year with just 2 seniors on the whole roster (one of them only played in 6 games). They will likely be a much improved team this season as their younger players develop.
Long Beach State finished at 15-19 (8-8 in Big West) and 225 in Kenpom. Unlike Providence, they graduated their 3 leading scorers, leaving not a single player on the team who average over 10 points per game last season. They are also the only team in the tournament who finished last season with a lower Kenpom rank that Wake Forest.
In their final game on December 1st, the Deacs will take on a team from the other side of the bracket. I’ll just jot down their records and Kenpom ratings from last year as a brief overview.
- Arizona: 17-15 (8-10 in PAC-12), 94th in Kenpom
- Pepperdine: 16-18 (6-10 in WCC), 151 in Kenpom
- UCF: 24-9 (13-5 in AAC), 34th in Kenpom
- Penn: 19-12 (7-7 in Ivy League), 130th in Kenpom
