The Deacs have a new look

We’ve been seeing hints that Wake Forest was making a change to their athletic brand for some time, and said rebrand was officially announced today in a press release from the Athletic Department. The rebrand includes a new shade of gold, a new font, the addition of grey to the color scheme, and a couple of new logos. The Deacs teamed up with Nike’s Global Identity Group and took 2 years to come up with a new look that aims to bring more consistency to the Wake Forest brand across all sports. You can find all the information in the press release linked above, or keep reading for a brief overview of the main changes. Don’t forget to vote in the poll at the end!

  1. A New Gold

If you have watched any of the Wake Forest fall sports teams in action, you have probably already noticed that the Deacs have moved away from the classic “old gold” color and are now using a lighter shade of gold. According to the Athletic Department, the lighter gold is more practical to use in print and on fabric for jerseys and apparel.

2. A New Font

To go along with the new gold, the Deacs also have a new font. The press release states that “the strong block typography is an essential component of the Wake Forest Athletics heritage, as it speaks to the no-nonsense, hardworking nature of players, coaches and fans.”

I don’t know about all of that, but the text certainly has a more modern, sleek feel to it. The Athletic Department also mentions that the use of just “WAKE” will become more prevalent on jerseys and apparel. You can see an example of that in the video below from the Women’s Basketball Team.

3. The Addition of Grey

We have already seen the addition of grey from the Men’s Basketball Team, but it looks like it is now going to be more widely used for all sports teams at Wake Forest. According to the release, the Deacs will wear dark steel grey, which is supposed to represent the “hard-nosed toughness of Demon Deacon student-athletes.” Personally, I think someone probably had a little too much fun coming up with these explanations. The Volleyball Team has worn grey several times this season already.

4. New Logos

Finally, the Deacs are unveiling 2 new logos: 1 of the famous top hat, which is obviously worn by the Deacon, and the other of the iconic “walking Deacon” statue on McCreary Plaza at BB&T Field. In my opinion, both of these are awesome and should definitely be used as much as possible.

Those are pretty much the main updates that you will see going forward at Wake Forest sporting events. You can see the full gallery of updated jerseys and such here.
