The Vitals

  • Established 1863
  • Located in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts
  • 14,419 students
  • $2.6 billion endowment (uh, holy crap)
  • #32 University according to USNWR
  • Motto: αἰὲν ἀριστεύειν (Ever To Excel)

Other Noteworthy Facts

  • Their fight song, “For Boston”, purports to be the oldest fight song in the US. In the least shocking news ever, it has been covered by Dropkick Murphys. Seriously, is there anything more Bostonian than those dudes?
  • Apparently, the term AHANA, used to refer to people of African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American descent, was coined by Boston College in 1979. They have trademarked the term and granted official permission for its use to over 50 other institutions. I knew literally none of this.
  • Wikipedia has BC’s campus literally broken up into 4 sub-campuses. Really, isn’t one of anything Boston-related enough?
  • There was a 5 episode parody of The OC entitled The B.C. made by Boston College students in 2005 (still viewable here for anyone who just can’t get enough college-student made film projects in their lives). Wikipedia describes the series as “widely acclaimed”. This is your periodic reminder that anyone can edit Wikipedia. But really, I’m sure it was a hit on the Boston College campus. Maybe. When it was made. In 2005. When I was a freshman at Wake. Has this bit gone on long enough? Probably.

Notable Alumni

  • Doug Flutie
  • John “Anybody But Bush But Him I Guess” Kerry

  • Doug Flutie
  • WWE Hall of Famer Rikishi (Also related to ACC Alumnus, current WWE Universal Champion Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i, who not only went to Georgia Tech, but was a defensive end [I believe] on the GT team we beat for the ACC Championship! I only mention this because we don’t play GT this year)
  • Doug Flutie
  • Matt Ryan
  • Ed McMahon
  • Amy Poehler
  • Leonard Freakin’ Nimoy
  • Did I mention Doug Flutie?

Sports!

  • Longest Tenured Coach: Tie between Joe Yukica and Tom O’Brien, 9 years
  • Wins Leader: O’Brien, 75–45–0
  • All-Time Record: 632–454–37 (.579)
  • Bowl Record: 14–12 (.538), including one National Title (DOUG FLUTIE DOUG FLUTIE)
  • Surprising Fact: Wikipedia lists that Boston College has one “unclaimed national title”. I don’t know exactly how you figure that out, but it was in 1940 so who am I to argue, honestly?

Other Things I Learned Writing This Article

  • Doug Flutie threw a Hail Mary one time, did you know?

That’s all for this week! Hopefully we’re all still alive for the next one. Stay safe, everybody.
