Wake Forest Football alums QB John Wolford and LB Jaboree Williams signed pro contracts with Jets and Eagles respectively. Both players left Wake Forest Football after the 2017 season, as they graduated from the university and finished their college football careers.
After a red-hot performance during 2017, that saw him shatter most of Wake Forest offensive records, QB. John Wolford made the jump to the pros by signing as an undrafted free agent for a tryout with the New York Jets. He had an impressive rookie camp, but due to tough competition in a crowded position, he was ultimately let go by the jets.
The Jets QB story today was obviously Sam Darnold, but the other QB in camp -- Wake Forest's John Wolford -- looked terriic. He's here on a tryout. QB room is crowded, so it'll be hard to stick, but his first day left an impression inside the organization.— Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoSNY) May 4, 2018
However, it seems like the impression he left was good enough to award him a second chance. After waiving injured WR Lucky Whitehead, the Jets brought Wolford back for the remainder of the preseason.
Once the preseason ends, Wolford will most likely stick with the Jet’s practice squad or go somewhere else. The clearest path for Wolford to stay on the Jets’ final 53 is if Teddy Bridgewater gets traded, which has been rumored recently by NFL pundits, but a move far away from any certainty. Otherwise, it is unlikely that the Jets would waive any of their three other QBs. Still, one thing Deacon fans learned last season is to never count John Wolford out.
Wolford might have some significant playing time against the Eagles for the Jets’ fourth and final preseason game. It will depend on how well he runs Coach Bowles’ system this week.
Bowles said they signed QB John Wolford with the practice squad in mind. If he learns quickly, he could see some second-half action Thurs vs. Philly. Bowles won't say which QB will start the annual Backup Bowl. #Jets— Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) August 26, 2018
Similarly, Jaboree Williams signed with the Philadelphia Eagles for Rookie Camp and was cut shortly thereafter due to huge competition in a crowded position. Now, after releasing S. Stephen Roberts and LB. Corey Nelson, Williams was signed back into the Eagles’ preseason roster. Once again, it is extremely unlikely for Williams to stick on the Eagles’ regular-season roster, due to the well-established depth they already have at the position. But, this might be William’s shot to impress enough for a practice squad spot or sign with another team.
With the two most recent signings, this makes five Deacs, from the Belk Bowl-winning squad, to join the NFL. The list is now comprised of S. Jessie Bates, DE. Duke Ejiofor, TE. Cameron Serigne, QB. John Wolford, and LB. Jaboree Williams. This is a major accomplishment for a school that is not very well known for developing NFL talent. Hopefully, this will continue a positive trend of Deacs turning pros. We at Blogger So Dear wish them luck in this new chapter on their lives and that they can represent their NFL teams, as well as they represented Wake Forest.
Stay tuned for more Wake Forest Football updates and as always Go Deacs.
