After a long national title drought, a WHOLE WEEK, Wake Forest is assured to claim its first NCAA singles champion today.
Petros Chysochos, the #4 seed in the Singles draw took down the #1 seed Martin Redlicki in what was a fantastic match. Chrysochos blitzed out to a win in the first set by a score of 6-1. Redlicki, who had been starting slow all week, found his stride in the second at the perfect time by breaking Petros at 4-4 and served out the next game to take the set 6-4 and send it to a decider. In the third after trading breaks, Chrysochos broke on a deuce point while up 5-4, and made himself the second Wake Forest Demon Deacon to reach the NCAA finals, joining Noah Rubin back in 2015.
Borna Gojo was a bit delayed as the Women’s Semifinal that was played before had raged on for 3 long sets. Gojo faced off against the #7 seed Nuno Borges, who has had a dream season and also took down Skander Mansouri in 3 tight sets earlier in the tournament. Borges stormed out to a 6-2 first set victory. Gojo was down 4-5, 15-40 in the second set and faced 3 match points. The native of Split, Croatia bombed 3 aces in a row to even things up, broke Borges the next game and held to take the 2nd 7-5. In the 3rd set, while on one leg as Gojo has been nursing a hamstring injury all tournament, he broke Borges twice and took the decider 6-2. Immediately after winning, he ran over to teammate Chrysochos, who he plays today in the final.
It’s been an absolute dream run for Wake Forest sports in the past two weeks. We had Jennifer Kupcho win the NCAA Women’s Individual Championship, the Wake Forest Mens Tennis team won the NCAA Team title (while at home!!) and now Wake is guaranteed another NCAA title while at home.

As always, go Deacs.
