The Diamond Deacs may have been one game from Omaha and the College Baseball World Series last year, but the coaches in the ACC do not believe Wake has the horses to get back to that level this year.

The 2018 ACC Preseason Coaches Poll was released today and Wake Forest was selected 5th in the Atlantic Division and 9th overall if you go by individual votes.

Despite being picked 5th in the Atlantic, Wake Forest received one vote from a coach to not only win the Atlantic Division, but win the ACC as well. I have no idea if you can vote for yourself as a coach, but it would be interesting to see if that vote came from head coach Tom Walter or another coach altogether.

The entire results are below:

Overall Champion

Florida State (10)

North Carolina (3)

Wake Forest (1)

Atlantic Division

1. Florida State (13) – 95

2. Louisville – 78

3. Clemson – 70

4. NC State – 53

5. Wake Forest (1) – 52

6. Boston College – 25

7. Notre Dame – 19

Coastal Division

1. North Carolina (12) – 96

2. Virginia (2) – 83

3. Duke – 62

4. Miami – 60

5. Georgia Tech – 46

6. Virginia Tech – 27

7. Pitt – 18

The Diamond Deacs start its 2018 season next Friday (February 16th) when it takes on Georgetown in its first game of the Wake Forest Tournament.

Wake Forest is replacing several key players from last year in both pitching and batting but returns a lot of productivity as well. It will be interesting to see how the early season goes before jumping into league play.

Overall I think Wake will end up better than 5th in the division, but it is a testament to how tough the ACC is year in and year out in baseball that the Deacs are picked 5th given the talent on the roster.
