Wake Forest’s Joel Coliseum has a New Basketball Court

The Joel has a new court and I have opinions on it

Wake Forest’s basketball teams will be playing on a brand new court this season. While official images haven't yet been released, a video released Monday showing Isaiah Mucius dunking gave us a sneak peak.

In looking at this court, several things stand out to me.

First, the paint (post) area has finally been returned to black instead of just plain old parquet flooring like the rest of the court. This was the case with prior courts, and I’m glad to see it return on the new court.

Second, the font has been updated to be more modern. There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the old font, but this modern font certainly looks nice.

Third, all lines are now white instead of black. This isn't a huge deal, but it’s certainly a change.

Fourth, and most glaringly there is NO Demon Deacon on the court. The midcourt logo is now just the gold WF logo.

I have no idea if any research was conducted by the university to see what logo fans would prefer to see on the new court. But it seems to me that the Demon Deacon is an iconic logo that no other school has anything like and this should be capitalized upon.

For one thing, the WF is already at midfield of BB&T Field, and there is no Deacon image anywhere on the field.

For another thing, the WF is used by other organizations.

The iconic image of the Deacon should be in prominent places in every Wake Forest University sporting venue.

Former Wake player Bobby Hoekstra suggested it could be based on the court that was used in the late 1990s and early 2000s with a more modern look.

Some have suggested a giant Deacon head at midcourt would have been a better look.

Thanks to fellow BSD writer Adam Bridgers, here is what that could look like:

Obviously the new court has already been designed and is in place, but maybe the next time we get a new court we can have something similar to what is above, or at least have the Deacon represented somewhere on the court.

UPDATE:

Today the Joel Coliseum released images of the new court.
