Ahead of Wake Forest football playing at Louisville on Saturday, we decided to take a look at the history of the Wake Forest and Louisville rivalry of sorts that has taken place over the last few years.

Most Recent Meeting: Wake Forest defeated Louisville 42-32 in Winston-Salem in a game in which Greg Dortch scored FOUR!!! touchdowns

Timeline of Events:

Dec. 30, 1958

Wake and Louisville meet for the first time ever in basketball, as the Cardinals defeat the Demon Deacons 74-64 in the Dixie Classic in Raleigh.

March 20, 1992

Louisville defeats Wake Forest 81-58 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

March 21, 1996

A Wake Forest team led by Tim Duncan defeats Louisville in the Sweet Sixteen 60-59 to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1984.

April 24, 2001

Skip Prosser is hired as the head coach of Wake Forest University’s men’s basketball team, and brings with him from Xavier assistant coaches Jeff Battle, Dino Gaudio, Chris Mack, and Pat Kelsey.

2003

Tommy Elrod joins head football coach Jim Grobe’s staff at Wake Forest.

July 20, 2004

Chris Mack leaves Skip Prosser’s staff at Wake Forest to become the associate head coach on Sean Miller’s staff at Xavier.

January 2, 2007

After the most successful season in program history and an ACC Championship, Wake Forest loses to Louisville 24-13 in the FedEx Orange Bowl in Bobby Petrino’s first stint as Louisville’s head coach. This was the BCS debut for both schools.

July 26, 2007

Wake Forest men’s basketball head coach Skip Prosser tragically dies of a heart attack. Wake Forest basketball has never been the same since.

August 8, 2007

Dino Gaudio is promoted to head men’s basketball coach at Wake Forest after Skip Prosser’s tragic death.

April 15, 2009

Former Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Chris Mack is named the head coach at Xavier University.

April 7, 2010

Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman fires head men’s basketball coach Dino Gaudio due to a “lack of postseason success”.

March 15, 2011

Wake Forest head football coach Jim Grobe announces the addition of Lonnie Galloway to the coaching staff.

January 12, 2013

Lonnie Galloway leaves Wake Forest, and resumes his former position as wide receivers coach at West Virginia.

December 2, 2013

Jim Grobe resigns after 13 seasons as the Wake Forest head football coach.

December 10, 2013

Wake Forest hires Dave Clawson as head football coach. Clawson decides not to retain Tommy Elrod on his coaching staff.

Summer 2014

Tommy Elrod is hired by IMG College as the football color commentator on the Wake Forest IMG Sports Network.

July 1, 2014

Louisville joins the ACC as a full member, and becomes part of the Atlantic Division in football, setting up yearly meetings between the Deacs and the Cardinals.

September 27, 2014

In the first meeting between the two schools since the 2007 FedEx Orange Bowl, and the first as conference foes, Louisville defeats Wake Forest 20-10.

January 4, 2015

Louisville and Wake Forest meet in basketball for the first time since 1996. Louisville defeats Wake Forest 85-76.

February 2, 2015

Louisville pulls the scholarship of running back Matt Colburn II, asking him to greyshirt a year. Colburn decides to reopen his recruitment.

February 11, 2015

Matt Colburn signs with Wake Forest, as coach Dave Clawson will not make him greyshirt.

October 30, 2015

In an ugly Friday night matchup, Louisville defeats Wake Forest 20-19 at BB&T Field.

March 13, 2016

Louisville hires former Wake Forest assistant coach Lonnie Galloway to be co-offensive coordinator.

November 9, 2016

Lonnie Galloway initiates a 25 minute phone call with Tommy Elrod ahead of Saturday’s game.

November 11, 2016

A Wake Forest equipment manager finds cards left behind on the field at Cardinal Stadium that reveal that the Cardinals potentially had evidence of plays Wake Forest had never run before, but was planning to use on Saturday. Head coach Dave Clawson met with coordinators and coaches and decided not to run the plays in light of the situation.

November 12, 2016

Louisville defeats Wake Forest 44-12 after trailing 12-0 in the first quarter. The Cardinals don't win any game the rest of the season.

November 16, 2016

Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson and athletic director Ron Wellman come forward with details of the leaked information. Louisville head football coach Bobby Petrino denies any knowledge of the allegations.

December 13, 2016

Wake Forest announces that former assistant coach and radio football color analyst Tommy Elrod provided inside confidential information to opponents, has been fired from his job with IMG, and has been banned from all Wake Forest athletic facilities.

December 14, 2016

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich reveals that Lonnie Galloway was involved in “WakeyLeaks” and suspends him for the team’s Citrus Bowl matchup with LSU. Jurich also admits that Louisville had knowledge of the Wake Forest plays, but it didn't matter because the plays were not used. Army and Virginia Tech also come forward with information that they may have been given plays by Elrod.

January 7, 2017

Sports Illustrated releases a piece in which an anonymous coach says Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson has no shot of playing in the NFL. Louisville fans, players, and coaches suspect the coach works for Wake Forest.

February 3, 2017

Details regarding texts and phone calls exchanged between Lonnie Galloway and Tommy Elrod are released, essentially proving that Elrod shared confidential information with Galloway.

March 1, 2017

Wake Forest basketball upsets #8 Louisville in Winston-Salem 88-81 to earn the school’s first NCAA Tournament bid since 2010.

August 7, 2017

At ACC Media Day Lamar Jackson asserts that it was Dave Clawson who made the comments about him having no shot at playing in the NFL. Clawson vehemently denies it.

September 26, 2017

Louisville head men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino denies any knowledge of allegations of recruiting violations, the latest being that the school paid $100,000 to the family of a recruit.

October 16, 2017

Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino is fired by the University of Louisville Board of Trustees.

October 18, 2017

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich is fired by the University of Louisville Board of Trustees for his role in the misconduct of the basketball program.

October 25, 2017

Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson and Louisville head football coach Bobby Petrino both deny any animosity between the two schools due to fallout from “WakeyLeaks”. Clawson reiterates that he was not the coach who said that Jackson was not an NFL caliber quarterback.

October 28, 2017

Wake Forest defeats Louisville 42-32 at BB&T Field for its first ever football win over the Cardinals. Redshirt freshman Greg Dortch goes off, scoring a school record four touchdowns in the game. Matt Colburn gets his revenge on Louisville and Petrino, as he has 24 carries for 134 yards.

Former Wake Forest assistant men’s basketball coach Chris Mack is named the new head men’s basketball coach at Louisville.
