Wake Forest Sports Rundown

A quick rundown on all the non-football sports currently in season

NCAA Football: Boston College at Wake Forest Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Here at BSD we spend a lot of our time covering football and basketball. For me, that’s simply because those are the 2 sports that I am most passionate about. That does not mean in any way we’ve forgotten about all the other fantastic sports that we have representing our favorite university.

With that in mind, I thought I’d take a little break from football and just give you guys a quick rundown of the other teams we that are active and how their seasons are going.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team, as everyone probably knows, is an absolutely powerhouse. The Deacs are currently ranked as the #1 team in the nation with a record of 15-1 (6-1 in the ACC) and are outscoring their opponents 45 to 16 this season. After beating the 6th ranked Virginia Cavaliers on the road this past Saturday, Wake secured a 4th straight ACC Atlantic Division crown. The men’s soccer team has 1 game left in the regular season, a home game this Friday against the Louisville Cardinals (game starts at 7pm). The Deacs are a perfect 10-0 at home and are looking to finish the season on a 5 game winning streak, so if you haven’t had the chance to see the Deacs in action yet, head out to Spry Stadium on Friday and check them out.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team is also having a very good season. With a record of 8-7-1 (4-5 in the ACC), the Deacs are ranked 27th in RPI out of 335 teams division 1 soccer teams. They have played a ridiculously tough schedule this season, playing 8 teams ranked in the Top 25 and coming away with wins against #5 Penn State, #16 NC State, and #11 Boston College. Their schedule doesn’t get any easier, as they finish their season this Thursday against 3rd ranked UNC in Cary.

Men’s Golf

This team might be one of the better ones that head coach Jerry Haas has had in a while, and that’s saying a lot considering who has come through the program. It has gotten off to an electric start, with three top three finishes, and a fourth place in the other tournament. Honestly there should already be a pair of trophies in the case for this year, as the Deacs held a lead on Sunday this past weekend, and also got run down by Louisville on the final few holes in the Old Town Collegiate. The fall season will wrap up this weekend with a tournament in Alabama.

Field Hockey

The Wake Forest field hockey team is also having a great season (If you haven’t noticed, we have some really good teams). They are currently 8-8 (2-4 in the ACC) and ranked 19th in the Top 25. Like the Women’s soccer team, the field hockey team has played an incredibly difficult schedule. The Deacs have played 10 teams in the Top 25, including #1 UNC, #4 Duke, #5 Michigan, #7 Louisville, #9 Syracuse, and #10 Princeton. That is one heck of a slate. The Deacs were able to come away with wins against Syracuse, Michigan and Louisville. The field hockey team finishes their season this Sunday at 1 pm at home against Davidson.

Volleyball

The volleyball team currently sits at 8-14 overall and 3-7 in the ACC. They have 4 home games remaining in the regular season, including this Sunday at 1pm against UVA. You can catch the action in Reynolds Gym.
