Deac of the Week: Scotty Washington

We’re calling this one without a vote

Usually, we put together a list of three nominees for Deac of the Week and solicit fan votes to name the winner. That wasn’t necessary after Wake escaped Boone with a 20-19 win to move to 4-0. Deac of the Week honors for the App State game go to RS sophomore receiver Scotty Washington. Congratulations!

With 10 seconds left in the game, the Mountaineers lined up to attempt a 39 yard game-winning field goal. The snap and the hold were good, but the 6’5” Washington jumped approximately ten feet in the air to get a hand on the ball and cinch Wake’s first back-to-back 4-0 start in school history.

That block is the reason we aren’t even putting forward nominees for a vote this week. However, Washington did more than block the ball - he also did a nice job catching it. He had 4 receptions for a career-high 79 yards, and all four of his grabs moved the chains on what ended up being scoring drives. When Wake was pinned on its own 3 yard line early in the second half, Washington had a 37 yard catch-and-run that sparked Wake’s first touchdown drive.

Stats

  • 4 receptions (T-2nd)
  • 79 yards receiving (1st)
  • 1 win-securing blocked FG

Highlights

First (last?) things first - we had to start with the block. But, check out the other highlights from Scotty Washington’s Deac of the Week outing against App State below.

Honorable Mentions:

If it weren’t for the blocked kick, we might have nominated some of the following players for their strong performances: Greg Dortch, Jessie Bates III, Jaboree Williams, Zeek Rodney, and Essang Bassey.

Who stood out to you in what was a relatively ugly game for the Deacs?
