Wake’s win over Utah State was certainly a team effort. The Deacs had three rushers and three receivers with at least 50 yards apiece, and nine different defenders registered a TFL. You can see by the list of honorable mentions how hard it was to trim this list down to three. With that said, here are your nominees for Deac of the Week:
Grant Dawson
We’ve covered the awesome story of how Grant Dawson went from being a preferred walk-on to a team captain. This week, Dawson was second on the team with 6 tackles (5 solo). He also had the only defensive points for the Deacs, when he paired with Boogie Basham for a safety that put Wake up 19-0.
Arkeem Byrd
In just his third game for the Deacs, redshirt freshman Arkeem Byrd was fed the ball often. He took advantage and broke out for 120 yards on 19 carries (6.3 ypc), including a 59 yard touchdown run. Byrd also caught one pass for 4 yards. Byrd has shown great speed so far this year, and it’s very exciting to see him contributing to what was already a much-improved backfield for the Deacs.
Tabari Hines
Hines had a relatively quiet start to the season, totaling just 47 yards in the first two games against Presby and BC. The junior WR bounced back and then some against Utah State, catching five passes for a career-high 129 yards. That included four receptions of least 20 yards, with Hines doing a lot of the work after the catch.
Honorable Mentions:
Cameron Glenn, John Wolford, Amari Henderson, Matt Colburn, Cam Serigne, Greg Dortch, Essang Bassey, Duke Ejiofor
