The Wake Forest Demon Deacons went up to Chestnut Hill last weekend and came home with a 24-point victory over the Boston College Eagles. With the first #businesstrip of the season out of the way, the Deacs will return to Winston-Salem for Homecoming. Will Wake Forest avenge a Utah State loss from Dave Clawson’s first year at Wake? Our staff offers predictions.
Adam: Deacs win 34-24
Greg Dortch and the rest of the receivers should have no trouble roasting the Utah State secondary while the Deacon defense slows down the fast paced Utah State offense.
Riley: I will take the Deacs 38-14
I know that's a bit higher than what most people think, but I feel like the offense still has a lot to prove and work on. This is the final tune up before the games get serious, so I think the staff is going to take the reigns off a bit and open it up a lot. The defense should have a good answer for the zone read offense and will limit the Aggies while the game is still in the balance.
The running game still needs work so I would love to see the Deacspound it out to get to the 200 yard mark.
Bart: Wake Forest wins 27-13
Wake's defense is better than most believe, even some of Wake's ownfanbase. Behind an impressive defensive front seven, Utah State willstruggle to move the ball at all and Wake will capitalize on positive field position. Deacs dominate throughout en route to three consecutive double digit wins to start the year.
Cam: Deacs win 42-14
We end up seeing 2 Qb's because this one gets ugly. Wake covers easily thanks to a fantastic game from Cade Carney and Cam Serigne.
Edward: Wake 38-Utah State 24
We've shown last week how good we can be running the ball behind animproved offensive line, and I look for Clawson to open up the passinggame a little bit this week. This should lead to more yardage andscoring. Utah State doesn't have the defense that Boston College does,so Wake should have an easier time moving the ball and not have torely on the defense to set up the offense. I look for the defense tocontinue to stand out as one of the best in the conference, and hopethe secondary that showed up against BC shows up again this week.
Elijah: Wake Forest wins 28-21
Wake wins 28-21 behind their efficient offense and timely defense. While Wolford will hopefully take less hits, he has still impressed so far in his senior season. Look for Dortch to maybe come back down to earth a little.
Rob: Wake Forest wins 27-17
I do worry about our lack of secondary depth against a more up-tempo team, but I'm hopeful that our defensive line can create enough pressure to get the defense off the field on third downs. Utah State's quarterback was extremely efficient against a bad Idaho State team, but he threw 3 interceptions against the Badgers in a 59-10 loss in Madison. Don’t be surprised if Jessie Bates makes reservations for six. I believe that Wake Forest will take Utah State very seriously because of what happened in 2014. The Aggies lost 4 of their top 5 defensive linemen from last season, so I expect that Wake should be able to continue with their efficient offense with RPO's and take advantage when they get good field position.
Ned: Wake 31-14
Wake's defense has been excellent so far this year, and I don't think the Aggies have enough talent to change that trend themselves. Wolford remains the composed game manager that he is and Greg Dortch continues to emerge as the go-to-guy on O. It's close early, but it doesn't end that way.
Woz: Wake 31-17.
I've been very surprised with the efficiency of Wake'soffense so far this season. Utah State doesn't have half the defensethat Boston College has, and Wake should easily roll to 3-0 on theseason.
Samurai: Wake 30-21.
I see this being a high scoring affair, but I think the Wake Forest defense and special teams will give the edge needed to come out on top.
We’ve made our predictions. What do you all think? Will OUR DEACS get off to a 3-0 start?
