Despite Wake scoring 34 points, it was the defense that shined. 21 of those points were off turnovers forced by Wake’s secondary. Combined with some relatively conservative play-calling on offense, that leads us to this week’s list of nominees for Deac of the Week:
S Cameron Glenn
After six straight punts by Wake and BC, Glenn started things off with about 3 minutes to go in the first quarter by forcing and recovering a fumble at BC’s 26 yard line. Four plays later, Wake scored the first points of the day. Then, on the third BC play after that fumble, Glenn made an athletic play to intercept the ball at midfield for his second takeaway of the game.
CB Essang Bassey
With just under 2 minutes to go in the first half, BC was down 14-7 and trying to put together a 2 minute drill to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Eagles, on the second play of the drive, QB Anthony Brown threw a pass that was a little off target. The ball bounced off the receiver’s hands and was grabbed by Bassey, who took it 30 yards to the house, putting the Deacs up two touchdowns at halftime.
S Jessie Bates III
Bates was all over the field against BC. He led the defense with 9 tackles, including 5 solo. He also had the only takeaway of the second half when he picked off Anthony Brown with about 5 minutes to go in the third. Bates ran it back 37 yards and was tackled just short of the end zone; Wake punched it in two plays later to go up 31-10.
Honorable Mentions:
Jaboree Williams, Greg Dortch
The takeaway here is that the secondary balled out. So who’s your pick in this all-DB edition? Who else impressed?
