We’re starting up a new recurring feature this season. After each game, we’ll nominate three players for Deac of the Week honors for their performance on the field. Tailoring the list to three isn’t going to be a scientific process, so don’t get too upset if your favorite player isn’t on the list. We’ll hold voting open for a few days, and then announce the winner.
Without further ado, in no particular order here are the nominees for Deac of the Week in Wake’s 51-7 win over Presbyterian:
QB John Wolford
Wolford started the season opener for the fourth year in a row, and he had himself a game. He finished 11/15 for 107 yards and 3 passing touchdowns, including the beauty above to Cam Serigne. He also ran 6 times for 47 yards and another score. Hinton also had an excellent game. Ultimately, I gave the nomination to Wolford because he came out and led the team to a 30-0 lead in under 1.5 quarters of play, and in the process showed success with a broad range of different kinds of throws and runs.
WR Greg Dortch
Dortch absolutely went off in his first game as a redshirt freshman. He caught 4 passes for a team-high 55 yards and 2 touchdowns (from 2 different quarterbacks). He had a kickoff return for 25 yards, four punt returns for 76 yards, and had a 95 yard return TD called back for holding. Overall, Dortch accounted for 156 all-purpose yards.
LB Justin Strnad
There were a few guys who made big defensive plays, and if I could I would nominate the entire defense for keeping Presby off the board for over 51 minutes. I’m nominating Strnad because he came up with the one takeaway of the night for the Deacs, an interception that he ran back 22 yards to the 7 yard line, setting up a one play touchdown drive. He also took down Presby’s QB behind the line of scrimmage to (temporarily) extend the shutout when the Blue Hose were threatening on 4th and 2 on Wake’s 11 yard line.
Honorable Mentions:
Kendall Hinton, Cam Serigne, Zeek Rodney, Jaboree Williams, Duke Ejiofor, Arkeem Byrd
