Wake Forest Basketball Great Dickie Hemric Passes Away at Age 83

Hemric holds the WFU all-time scoring and rebounding records.

Sad news out of Wake Forest today, as it was announced by the school that basketball legend Dickie Hemric passed away today at the age of 83:

Hemric played from the Demon Deacons from 1952-55 and was the all-time career leading scorer and rebounder in school history. It is very likely that his records will never be broken at Wake.

He managed to average 24.9 PPG and 17.3 RPG over his four seasons as a Demon Deacon, totaling 2,587 points and 1,802 rebounds.

The 2,587 career points stood for over 50 years until J.J. Redick and Tyler Hansbrough both passed it in the mid-2000’s. The 1,802 rebounds is still an ACC record.

He also holds the NCAA D1 record for made free throws and free throw attempts, going 905-1,359 in his career (67%).

Hemric was drafted tenth overall in the 1955 NBA Draft, where he played two seasons before retiring, but not before he won the 1957 NBA title with the Boston Celtics.

He was truly a Demon Deacon legend, and many of his records will stand forever at Wake Forest and the NCAA. Rest In Peace Dickie, our thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
