The No. 15 Wake Forest Demon Deacons took care of business in its final regular season non-conference game of the year with a 10-3 victory over Appalachian State in a game played in Shelby, NC.
The Diamond Deacs (36-16) got down early 3-0 to the Mountaineers (19-33), but used a seven run 5th inning to take a lead they would not give up.
After the bases got jacked with no outs, Johnny Aiello hit his first grand slam of the year, becoming the ninth Demon Deacon to do so during the regular season.
From there Logan Harvey doubled, Jonathan Pryor walked, and Jake Mueller singled them both home after they advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch.
Overall the Deacs tabulated 7 runs on 5 hits in the inning.
Drew Loepprich started the game for Wake, but only managed 5 outs before he was pulled in favor of Chris Farish. Wake threw 8 guys in the game, with nobody going more than 2 innings.
Morgan McSweeney picked up the win to move to 4-1 on the year after tossing two innings of two hit ball with two strikeouts.
This will ensure that everybody is available for this weekend against Pittsburgh, as well as next week for the ACC Tournament that begins on May 23rd (next Tuesday).
Wake Forest finishes the regular season with a 19-6 out of conference record, and stayed in 9th in the national RPI.
The Deacs will return to the diamond on Thursday with the first pitch against Pittsburgh scheduled for 6 PM.
