According to Evan Daniels of Scout, Wake Forest will have a visitor from nearby Greensboro Day School this weekend.

The 2018 6-5 shooting guard out of GDS unofficially visited Winston-Salem on February 4th.

Newman has a lot of length for a guard, and according to an interview with Phenom Hoops Report, already has offers from Georgia Tech, Clemson, Cincinnati, Charlotte, and Providence.

As with most of the elite in North Carolina, Newman is a 2-time alum of the North Carolina Top 80. After one of his performances we wrote, “What’s not to like about the athletic and skilled wing. Coach Baxter stated it best, “John Newman is a big time player, can do it all! He has a really high motor and plays hard.” Overall, John Newman is tracking at a HM level. He has the ability to dominate both ends of the court and has really developed a superb mid-range game. More importantly, Newman understands team concepts and is outstanding in team defensive philosophies.

For a team that has struggled in the past at wing defense, you can understand why Danny Manning is so interested in the 6’5 junior. Newman’s ability to virtually guard 3 positions has helped him become one of the staff’s top targets since attending a Wake camp in August 2014. His jump shot is steadily improving and his nonstop energy helps him find ways to make an impact on a game regardless of the opponent. While the video below is over a year old, it helps demonstrate his play style and what he could bring to Wake Forest from day 1.

247Sports has him with offers from Boston College, Charlotte, and Old Dominion.

PHR has him ranked as the 7th best player in North Carolina in the class of 2018. Other Wake Forest targets on that list include Devon Dotson (1), Jaylan Hoard (3), and Aaron Wiggins (4).

Wake should be able to take at least 3-4 players in the 2018 class, and Newman is a guy that Danny Manning and the staff have had their eye on for a while. He’s a name to keep in mind as we move ahead to the AAU season.
