Jay Sawvel’s defense has gotten one heck of a signing thanks to the addition of Florida linebacker Ryan Smenda.
A 3* recruit according to 247Sports,he’s reported as a hard hitting linebacker, something that’s pretty clear watching highlights from him. He also seems to have good instincts, having a good eye for when to go ball-hunting, even though he’s a backer and not a member of the secondary Smenda is ranked as the #37 ILB, and got offers from a litany of programs.
Here’s the entire list. Akron, Alcorn State, Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Colorado State, Connecticut, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, Maryland, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Texas A&M, Troy, USF, and Western Kentucky.
He also had interest, but no official offer, from Duke, Georgia,, Indiana, Memphis, and Vanderbilt. That is a long, LONG list with many quality programs, and Smenda chose the Deacs. There’s not too much else to say other than it’s obvious that Wake is winning recruiting battles, perhaps not with the Alabamas and Clemsons of the world, but plenty of strong programs.
Smenda is listed at approximately 6’2”, 210, and the profile of a hard-hitting backer with a nose for the ball sounds a favorable tune when you pair that with a powerful defensive line and improving secondary. Welcome to the family, Ryan! Go Deacs.
