DOTW Vote: Wake at Notre Dame

Who gets your vote as Deac of the Week?

NCAA Football: Wake Forest at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Notre Dame came away with a 48-37 win in what was decidedly not a defensive struggle. Well, the defenses did struggle - the Fighting Irish accrued 720 yards of offense (tying a program record) and the Deacs were able to put up a little over 580 yards themselves.

In the past we’ve selected three nominees, but there are no hard and fast rules. In this game, we felt there were two clear choices. Here are the nominees for Deac of the Week:

WR Alex Bachman

Coming into this game, the junior wide receiver had 4 catches for 74 yards. Bachman crushed his career highs by catching 8 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. We knew the receiving corps was going to have to step up in Dortch’s absence, and Bachman was the main component of that effort this week. The clip above shows him bailing out Wolford on a slightly underthrown ball that could easily have been intercepted.

RB Matt Colburn II

That’s two 100+ yard performances in a row for the junior running back. Colburn led all rushers by running 20 times for 120 yards and a score against the Irish. He’s now averaging 4.8 yards per carry on the season, with 5.8 ypc in these past two games as the lead back. The big third-down run shown above took the Deacs into the red zone, where Weaver kicked a FG for the Deacs to fleetingly take the lead (and permanently break ND’s streak of not allowing opponents to score on their first possession).

Honorable Mentions

John Wolford, Scotty Washington, Cam Serigne, Cameron Glenn, Ja’Cquez Williams
