Playbook: Wake Forest vs UNCG

A quick look at how Wake Forest went to the post to beat the Spartans

NCAA Basketball: NC-Greensboro at Wake Forest Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The Deacs picked up their second win of the season on Friday, beating the UNCG Spartans (4-2) by a score of 81-75. Wake Forest appeared to make a concerted effort to getting the ball down low to Doral Moore, who had a sizeable height advantage over the Spartans. Doral finished with 17 points on 6-6 shooting and 7 rebounds.

There’s nothing fancy going on here at all; Doral does a great job getting position in the post and overpowers the smaller Jordy Kuiper (32). This is just good old fashioned “our guy is bigger than your guy, so we’re going to give him the ball and good luck stopping him.” Seems like getting the ball down low more was part of the game plan, as you can see Wilbekin directing Crawford where to send the ball.

Again, we can see Moore doing a great job getting position deep in the post. Kuiper knows he has no chance stopping Moore, so he tries to deny the entry pass. Moore uses his strength to ward him off, and Woods makes a nice bounce pass into the post for an easy dunk. Doral has definitely showed some great improvements over the last few games.

Here’s just one more example, with Moore showing his ability to score from the post in ways other than dunking (not that there’s anything wrong with dunking). Once again, he’s able to get position right at the block; As he turns and extends to shoot the hook shot, there is absolutely no way Kuiper is going to be able to do anything to defend this shot.

As you can see, the Deacs did a great job making use of the huge advantage they had inside, and used it to help pick up a much needed win.
