Wake pulled off a 30-24 win over NC State in one of the most thrilling games of the season. Now that everyone has had a night to sleep off the giddiness, let’s get to business. Here are your nominees for Deac of the Week:
WR Tabari Hines
Hines powered the Wake offense against NC State. He did so by continually getting open for a team-high 8 catches resulting in career highs of 139 yards and three touchdowns. That marked Hines’ second straight game with 8+ catches and 100+ yards.
LB Demetrius Kemp
Kemp made plays all over the field for the Deacs. Along with his 8 total tackles (7 solo), Kemp forced both NC State fumbles. Kemp forced and recovered a game-saving fumble in the fourth quarter that turned what would have been a go-ahead touchdown for NCSU into a touchback for Wake.
CB Essang Bassey
After Kemp’s heroics, NC State’s defense forced a three-and-out by Wake, giving the Wolfpack the ball and 41 seconds to score 7 points for the win. A few plays later, Ryan Finley had the ball at Wake’s 35 yard line with 12 seconds left. Finley took a shot to the back of the end zone where he had his two leading receivers waiting: 6’3” Kelvin Harmon (8 receptions for 105 yards) and 6’2” Jakobi Meyers (10 receptions for 90 yards). Bassey (5’10”) made a perfectly-timed athletic play to elevate over those two and grab the ball to secure the win for Wake.
Honorable Mentions:
The offensive line (we’re going to need to put together a piece on just how excellent the unit has been this year), John Wolford, Matthew Colburn II, Chuck Wade, Cameron Glenn, Jaboree Williams
