DOTW Vote: Wake at Syracuse

Who gets your vote as Deac of the Week?

NCAA Football: Wake Forest at Syracuse Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Wake’s offense continued to roll against Cuse, putting up 734 yards and 64 points in a big comeback win. Last week we deviated from the usual three and only put up two names for DOTW - so this week we’ll make up for it with four choices. Your nominees for Deac of the Week are:

QB John Wolford

Wolford disassembled the Orange defense, throwing for 363 yards and 3 scores while rushing for 136 yards and another 3 scores. That marks the second time (alongside Louisville) the senior quarterback has accounted for 6 touchdowns in a single game this year. His 499 total yards was the third best single-game mark in school history.

TE Cam Serigne

Serigne was a major part of the Deacon aerial attack on Saturday. He caught 7 passes for a season-high 119 yards and reeled in all three of Wolford’s passing touchdowns. Those three receiving TDs puts him in a tie for second place all-time in a single game at Wake.

RB Matthew Colburn II

Colburn was the definition of a workhorse this week. With lingering injuries to Cade Carney and possibly Arkeem Byrd, Colburn was on the field for every offensive snap. Other than Wolford keepers, no one but Colburn rushed the ball for the Deacs against Cuse. The result? 31 carries for 237 yards and 2 touchdowns (all career highs). That performance was good for 7th all-time in school history for single game rushing yards.

LB Jaboree Williams

The defense did not perform up to its own standards in the first half. But, it toughened up remarkably in the second half, and Williams made what was arguably the biggest play of the day. With the Orange offense regaining its footing and driving deep into Wake territory looking for what would have been a go-ahead touchdown, Williams instead picked off Zack Mahoney and returned it 52 yards to set up a Wake touchdown to give the Deacs a two score lead that they never relinquished. He also made 8 tackles, good for second-most on the team.

Honorable Mentions

Justin Strnad, Tabari Hines, Scotty Washington, Essang Bassey, the entire O line, and the entire defense (from the second they left the locked room after the half).
