Wake Forest Football Recruiting: Official Visits List (1/20)

Huge recruiting weekend ahead for the Deacs

With National Signing Day only 12 short days away, Dave Clawson and the Demon Deacons have shown no signs of slowing down. A handful of touted commits and targets are scheduled to be on campus this weekend for official visits.

Starting with Demetris Harris, a 6’3, 270 pound OL out of Jacksonville, FL, this is a recruit that could be utilized for depth given the injury problems that have plagued the Deacs over the past couple of years at the position. High motor, quick learner, and hard-worker, he would fit right into the Deacs scheme going more towards the run. The 3* prospect has a visit to Houston next weekend, and with Charlie Strong and USF making a strong push this is anyone’s ballgame going into the weekend.

Raheem Layne is one of the newest names, but could make one of the biggest splashes in a position of need in terms of depth at CB. At 6’1, 175, Layne fit the mold of a traditional corner. With the new defensive coaching carousel at both Minnesota and Wake, this one is another toss up and would be a massive steal for Wake Forest.

Along with Layne will be highly touted commit, and one of the recruits I’m most intrigued about, Jeffery Burley. Hailing from Jackson, GA (about an hour and a half south of Athens), watching his tape it honestly looks like I’m watching someone fly around the field. He has been committed to the Deacs since July, but Ole Miss has been hot on the trail for him trying to get him to flip. A successful official visit this could all but seal the deal for Wake.

Waydale Jones is another target closer to NSD to keep your eyes on. A big play receiver from Beevile, TX, he could be one of the finer pieces in this class. Another example of a touted recruit that equally cares about his education, Wake finds itself primarily fighting with Vanderbilt for him, and this seems like a complete toss up going into the weekend.

Chase Monroe has been a household name for anyone who has followed Wake Forest recruiting. A standout senior from Davidson, NC who’s only downside as only right now seems to be he just needs to get stronger, which is something Wake has been increasingly better at over the years. There haven’t been any rumblings of flips anywhere but a great visit wouldn’t hurt. This young man was named North Carolina Defensive Player of the Year and is a great get for the Deacons.

Before Tayvon Bowers went down with a knee injury, he was lighting up the field. A big bodied, mobile quarterback that doesn’t seem to panic, decided to come down to this weekend as well. He’s going to greyshirt this year, but hopefully he makes a full recovery and comes back stronger in 2018.

Last, but certainly not least, visiting we have Jake Simpson out of Buford, GA. He’s an athletic, hard-working linebacker who committed to the Deacs back in February of last year. He fits right into the mold of keeping speed and the most athletic people on the field at all times.

The Deacs are starting to put the final touches on the class, and it looks like it will be a wild finish to February 1st. I’m confident the Deacs will pull out the recruits in areas of need and finish an already fantastic looking class. This group is a solid mix of current commits and targets. Hopefully the ones who are already committed will help grow the enthusiasm of those undecided and get them to commit.
