Wake Forest Women's Basketball Team Makes the Women's NIT

The Lady Deacs will be playing in the postseason.

Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

The Wake Forest women's basketball team has earned a berth in the Women's National Invitational Tournament. They are one of four ACC teams to make the NIT, along with Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, and Virginia. Wake Forest went 16-15 over the course of the regular season and ACC Tournament. This is the school's 4th ever appearance in the Women's NIT, with the last appearance coming in 2012.

UPDATE: Wake Forest will play at Charlotte on Thursday. The time should be finalized some time on Tuesday. Charlotte went 19-11 this season, including 12-6 in Conference-USA.

According to Jeff Sagarin's women's basketball ratings, Wake Forest is a better team, especially as of late, but Charlotte will probably be a very small favorite due to home court advantage. The winner of the contest will play the winner of Florida Gulf Coast and Bethune-Cookman. Florida Gulf Coast will be a strong favorite in the opening round.

This is head coach Jen Hoover's 4th season with the Deacs, and her first time leading them to postseason play. She has signed several strong recruiting classes during her time in Winston-Salem, and her efforts on the recruiting trail are paying off on the court.

She told Wake Forest's website, "We are very excited to be playing in the 2016 WNIT. We've worked hard to bring the program into the national spotlight and this is a stepping stone on the way to where we want to be as a program. We're anxiously awaiting who we will play first so we can get started on the road to winning a championship."

The Deacs earned a big win in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Let's hope that trend continues in this tournament. As always, go Deacs!
