Virginia Tech Involved in #WakeyLeaks Scandal

Another team has emerged in the #WakeyLeaks scandal.

A new team has emerged in the infamous #WakeyLeaks scandal. This afternoon, Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock announced that Virginia Tech was contacted by Wake Forest University as part of the Tommy Elrod scandal. Virginia Tech joins Louisville and Army as known teams that have been contacted by Wake Forest. Babcock’s full statement is below.

Let me begin by saying that this is how you issue a press release. He accepted responsibility and was not dismissive of the situation. At this point it’s unknown which assistant coach received the proprietary information from Elrod. There were no assistants from that staff who previously coached with Elrod.

The Virginia Tech game is especially relevant, as it’s the often mocked game that Wake Forest won 6-3 in double over-time. The screen grab from below shows former Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer seemingly celebrating the teams being scoreless headed into overtime. I personally love the game because it was Coach Clawson’s first ACC win, and the defense was absolutely sensational in that game.

Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel reports that the leaked information involves trick plays. Hmm, I think it’s reasonable to conclude that a team that was one of the worst offensive teams in the country could have greatly benefited from one or two trick plays in a game like this one.

We will continue to update you all as the situation continues.
