Donovan Mitchell is our next player profile on the list. He comes to Wake Forest by way of Buchanan High School in Clovis, California. Mitchell is a 3 star recruit and was ranked 148th in the 2016 class by Rivals. At 6-8, he is a versatile forward that can play on the wing or in the paint. What can we expect from him this season?
So far this year we have seen very little of Mitchell so it’s difficult to say exactly what fit he will be on the team. In high school, he showed an ability to drive the ball to the basket and shoot from the outside. In Nassau, he averaged just 2 points per game and 2.3 rebounds per game while shooting 38%.
He did not see very much action in Wake Forest’s exhibition game against Piedmont International, so I think that it’s safe to say, barring injuries, that he probably won’t see a large amount of playing time this season, especially early on. He will likely only be inserted into the game in very small minutes when other players are in foul trouble. With Manning favoring more 3 guard style lineups, I suspect that Mitchell will wind up playing power forward for a majority of his time at Wake Forest rather than out on the wing.
Mitchell was an all-state volleyball player in high school. You can tell from his game film below that he is very explosive athlete who can develop into a stretch 4 in Manning’s system. Manning looks for versatile players, and Mitchell fits that mold.
What do you guys think we will see from Mitchell in his first year?
