Wake Forest hasn’t technically qualified for a bowl game yet, but the Deacs are one game away from bowl eligibility, and have three very winnable games remaining. Where do the experts have Wake Forest bowling this December?
ESPN - Hyundai Sun Bowl
ESPN doesn’t have a projected opponent, but ESPN’s David Hale is projecting that Wake Forest will play in the Sun Bowl, which will be held on December 30th at 2 p.m. (ET) in El Paso, Texas, and will be broadcast on CBS.
CBS Sports - Hyundai Sun Bowl vs. USC
CBS also has the Deacs playing in the Sun Bowl, and they project that the Deacs will play Southern California. This would be a great game for the Deacs. They’d be underdogs in this one, but it would be a fun game for Wake fans to see, and they’d have nothing but upside in this one.
SB Nation - St. Petersburg vs. Cincinnati
SB Nation has the Deacs taking on Cincinnati in the St. Petersburg bowl. That game will take place on December 26th at 11 a.m. (ET) in St. Petersburg, Florida. This would be a nice location for Wake fans to go to in December, and they’d be taking on a decent opponent, but unfortunately it’s a difficult travel game due to it being the day after Christmas.
College Football News - Camping World Independence Bowl vs. North Texas
College Football News has Wake playing North Texas in the Independence Bowl, which will be played on December 26th at 5 p.m. in Shreveport, Louisiana. This would definitely be sub optimal from a fan perspective. It’s a difficult location to get to, and it wouldn’t exactly be against the sexiest opponent in the world.
Campus Insiders - Camping World Independence Bowl vs. Cal
Campus Insiders also has Wake headed to Shreveport. This still isn’t on an ideal date or in an ideal location, but it would be against another Power Five opponent who plays an exciting brand of football with the “Bear Raid” offense.
Heavy - Military Bowl vs. Tulsa
Heavy.com has Wake Forest playing Tulsa on December 27th at 3:30 p.m. (ET) in Annapolis, Maryland. This wouldn’t be an exciting matchup from a #brand perspective, but Annapolis is only a 6 hour drive from Winston, and is a very nice city. It’s also two days after Christmas instead of one, so that should make it a more realistic option for Wake fans to attend.
Wake still has five games remaining, and there’s a lot that can happen between now and then. It’s still possible that Wake could play in a bowl like the Belk Bowl (Charlotte) or Music City (Nashville). Those would be awesome bowls that plenty of Wake fans would attend. Do any of these matchups excite you?
