Here are some quick hitter observations from camp today for those (like me) who have short attention spans. Drop some questions in the comments if you saw otherwise or have any questions that I didn't address. Football is almost back, folks.
- As expected and very unfortunately, top returning WR Jared Crump has torn his ACL and is out for the season according to Deacons Illustrated.
- The defense dominated the scrimmage today and Wendell Dunn had several big plays that stood out, including a couple sacks on John Wolford.
- With Josh Banks and Tylor Harris still out, the DL that got the most snaps with the first team appeared to be Willie Yarbary, Zeek Rodney, Rashawn Shaw and Chris Stewart. Of the freshmen, Chris Calhoun and Kahlil Welsh rotated with the 1s and 2s.
- Maryland transfer safety Zach Dancel saw some reps with the first team
- The top 3 receivers on the depth chart after Crump's injury appear to be Cortez Lewis, Tabari Hines and KJ Brent. Tyree Harris also had some big grabs with both the first and second teams, including a juggling TD in traffic.
- John Wolford and Kendall Hinton had 1 interception each. Hinton's was picked off by Demetrius Kemp and Wolford's by Thomas Dillion, who returned it 60+ yards for a TD.
- The third string offense was the first to break through today, all on the shoulders of freshman QB Kyle Kearns and freshman WR Steven Claude. They connected 3 times in a row, the final a nice crossing route of about 20 yards in the middle of the endzone.
- Wolford improved near the end of the day, capped off by a beautiful floating pass under pressure to Lewis, who jumped higher than a couple defenders and came down with the TD in the back corner of the endzone.
- Returning punts will be true freshmen Tabari Hines and Alex Bachman.
- Tyler Bell got most of the snaps at first string RB today. Matt Colburn also got a few with the first team near the end of the practice. Soph Isaiah Robinson is a little dinged up and did not scrimmage today.
- After missing the first scrimmage, Rocky Reid saw some action with the third team today. At the end of the scrimmage he caught a screen pass for about 10 yards and then had a 15 yard run on the next play. It'll be interesting to see how the snaps break out between all three freshmen RBs along with Robinson and Dez Wortham.
- This will not surprise anyone, but Cam Serigne will be Wolford's safety valve early and often this season. He's very reliable and usually finds a way to get open.
- The new kickoff man Ben Brown boomed both of his attempts out of the endzone to begin the practice.
- 6'4" LB Zack Wary has good size for the position and saw snaps with the first team defense, as did Jaboree Williams. Getting a couple other LBs to help the strength of the team, Brandon Chubb, Marquel Lee and Hunter WIlliams, could be critical.
