Wake Forest Wide Receiver Matt James Earns Tryout with Carolina Panthers

Will the Wake Forest product be playing close to home?

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

Former Wake Forest wide receiver, Matt James, is trying out for the Carolina Panthers today at their rookie minicamp. James was not overly productive during his time at Wake Forest, but he does have NFL size at 6'5", 211 pounds. Matt finished his Wake Forest career with 48 receptions, 458 yards, and 0 touchdowns, but the best game of his career came in the 2014 season finale against Duke, in which he had 9 receptions for 87 yards.

Part of his lack of productivity can be attributed to unfortunate injuries. In 2012 he missed 7 games due to a broken collarbone, while he missed the first six games of the 2013 season due to a shoulder injury. He also missed three games during the 2014 season due to an injury suffered in a game against Louisville.

At the Wake Forest Pro Day, James ran the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds, had a vertical jump of 36 inches, ran the cone drill in 6.71 seconds, performed 16 bench press reps of 225 pounds, and had a broad jump of 10'08".

The Carolina Panthers were 19th in passing yards last season, and did draft a wide receiver in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft.

Best of luck to Matt this weekend, as he pursues his dream of playing in the NFL.
