The Post and Courier is reporting that former Wake Forest head men's basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik is a finalist for the vacancy at The Citadel. The Citadel fired former head coach Chuck Drissell two weeks ago. Bzdelik resigned from Wake Forest in March of 2014 after four seasons and a 51-76 record. He is currently an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies, who have are in second place in the Western Conference.
Bzdelik is one of several finalists, and appears to have the strongest resume of the candidates cited in the Post and Courier piece, however it's unclear what criteria the athletic director is using. Bzdelik has experience at military academies from his days coaching Air Force. Bzdelik led Air Force to a 50-16 record in his two-year stint at Air Force. He is also the only one of the candidates who has experience at either the NBA or Power Five level of college basketball.
The Citadel has never made the NCAA Tournament. The finished 11-19 last season and were 331st in Ken Pom. Drissell averaged just over 8 wins per season during his five year stint at The Citadel, and had an average Ken Pom ranking of 318.
Editor's Note: The Post and Courier has updated its original article to note that Jeff Bzdelik is not interested in the job.
