Wake Forest Football Opponent Results: Week 1

Here we look at how Wake Forest's football opponents in 2014 performed in Week 1.

Scott Cunningham

As you already know, Wake Forest was defeated by ULM. But this article is not about the Demon Deacons's loss that we have dissected from a variety of angles here at BSD. This piece will track how Wake Forest opponents fare in their games. We will continue this piece week-by-week to gather information on future opponents and look at how past opponents perform.

Week 2: vs Gardner-Webb (0-1)

Result: LOST @ Furman 13-3

Recap: Gardner-Webb's stout defense was not enough to defeat Furman- a top FCS program. The Runnin' Bulldogs managed just 194 yards of total offense. QB Lucas Beatty went 15-31 for 125 yards and an INT. They are eager to ruin Dave Clawson's home opener this weekend.

Week 3: @ Utah State (0-1)

Result: LOST @ Tennessee 38-7

Recap: Oft-renowned for scaring major BCS schools, many were surprised to see the Volunteers thoroughly dominate the Aggies. Utah State lost the turnover battle 3-0 and were held scoreless until the fourth quarter. It will be interesting to see how they do against Idaho State after a deflating performance to open the year.

Week 4: vs Army

Result: BYE

The Black Knights open at Buffalo this Saturday.

Week 5: @ No. 25 Louisville (1-0)

Result: WON vs Miami 31-13

Recap: Louisville was not too welcoming in its first game in the ACC. The Cardinals defeated Miami, arguably the "favorites" in the Coastal Division, on both sides of the ball. First-year QB Will Gardner showed every bit of the arm strength that Bobby Petrino has praised. Veteran running back Dominique Brown ran for 143 yards and a touchdown. Watch out Clemson and FSU!

Week 6: @ No. 1 Florida State (1-0)

Result: BEAT Oklahoma State 37-31 @ Jerry World (AT&T Stadium)

Recap: Hold off your ballots for Florida State in the College Football Playoff because the Seminoles can bleed!!! A disciplined Cowboy team held the lead in the fourth quarter and put a serious scare in FSU. Jameis Winston threw for 370 yards but threw two interceptions. Rashad Greene gave everyone in Tallahassee a good reason to forget about Kelvin Benjamin: 11 receptions for 203 yards and a touchdown.

Week 7: BYE

Week 8 : vs Syracuse (1-0)

Result: WON vs Villanova 27-26 2OT

Recap: In one of the more wacky results of the weekend, the Orange edged out a pesky Villanova team. The Wildcats, playing in the FCS, actually totaled 69 more yards and possessed the ball for 15 more minutes than Syracuse. The Orange stopped Villanova on their two-point conversion attempt in double OT to squeak out the win. Syracuse was led by running back Prince-Tyson Gulley with 11 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown. A frustrated QB Terrel Hunt was ejected for punching a Wildcat linebacker.

Week 9: vs Boston College (1-0)

Result: WON vs Massachusetts 30-7

Recap: Boston College had no trouble replacing four-year starting QB Chase Rettig. Senior QB Tyler Murphy threw for 173 yards and ran for 118 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. This game served as a good confidence builder against an in-state FCS team. The Eagles welcome former Big East foe Pittsburgh next week.

Week 10: BYE

Week 11: No. 23 Clemson (0-1)

Result: LOST @ Georgia 45-21

Recap: Clemson entered halftime with a tie game against their in-state rivals. Clemson ended the game with a scoreless second half and a lot of looks at Todd Gurley's rear. Cole Stoudt looked overwhelmed following in the footsteps of Tajh Boyd. The Tigers' high-powered offense managed only 291 yards of offense- 168 less than they gave up. The inexperienced Tigers need to regroup before ACC play.

Week 12: @ NC State (1-0)

Result: WON vs Georgia Southern 24-23

Recap: NC State did something that Florida couldn't last year: defeat Georgia Southern. After trailing 17-3 at halftime, the Wolfpack needed a touchdown in the final minutes to clinch the victory. QB Jacoby Brissett led the charge with 291 yards passing for 3 touchdowns.

Week 13: vs Virginia Tech (1-0)

Result: WON vs William & Mary 34-9

Recap: Virginia Tech played as one would expect against the Tribe. The Hokies had 488 yards of total offense and QB Michael Brewer put up a strong 251 yards for 2 TDs. RB Shai McKenzie rushed for 106 yards and a TD on nine carries. The real test begins next week when the Hokies go to Columbus to take on Ohio State.

Week 14: @ Duke (1-0)

Result: WON vs Elon 52-13

Recap: Anthony Boone and the rest of the Blue Devils ordered Phoenix on a sandwich for both lunch and dinner. The Blue Devils, who posted 567 yards of total offense, were led by Boone's 247 yards and four TDs. Potential All-ACC receiver Jamison Crowder reeled in seven passes for 93 yards and 2 TDs. Duke should coast to a 4-0 record with Troy, Kansas and Tulane up next.
