Wake Forest Football Practice Recap: August 1st

A summary of my thoughts on Wake Forest's first fall practice.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

It was a wet and rainy morning in Winston-Salem, but that didn't stop the Deacs from taking to the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex at 6:00 a.m. The players were wearing jerseys, shorts and helmets, as they will do until Sunday when they add shells. The team's first practice in full gear will be on Tuesday morning.

Below are some of my observations and opinions. As a caveat, it was just the first practice, so I will do my best to keep that in mind with my thoughts.

  • In my opinion, John Wolford is the best quarterback on the team. He was fairly composed, accurate and made good decisions with the football. He is smaller than Cameron and Sousa, but he has nice touch on the ball and went through his progressions well.
  • Tyler Cameron was taking the first team reps at quarterback and looked better than he did in the spring. I'm not sure if this is an indication he will start against ULM, but this is where he was situated on the first day of practice.
  • Dez Wortham looked good in the time I saw him. It's definitely difficult to judge a running back's ability when there are no pads/tackling, but he has a legitimate chance to win the starting job. At the very least, he should be a very good backup to Orville Reynolds.
  • Zachary Allen looked impressive in the pass rushing drill I watched. I also thought Tylor Harris as well as freshmen Zeek Rodney and Rashawn Shaw looked solid in this drill.
If anyone has any specific questions I will do my best to answer them, but it's difficult to evaluate that many players at one time. Blogger So Dear will continue to provide as many practice reports as possible. Wake Forest's first game is just 27 days away.
