Wake Forest Player Countdown: No. 33 RB Dez Wortham

What impact will the redshirt freshman make?

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

Coming in at number 33 on our player countdown is redshirt freshman Dez Wortham. Wortham is a running back out of Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas. He was a consensus 3-star prospect coming out of high school and chose Wake Forest over Kentucky, Connecticut and Houston. The running back tore his ACL during his senior year of high school and also tore his Achilles tendon during a practice last August. Coach Clawson said that Wortham is fully healthy and ready to go.

Wortham will have the opportunity to compete with playing time, while Dominique Gibson serves a three game suspension for a violation of team rules. Wortham reminds me a lot of Orville Reynolds, in that he has good quickness and receiving ability out of the backfield. A tailback who can catch dump downs and swing passes will clearly be a major asset to a first year starting quarterback. Dez is also an efficient runner who quickly hits the hole and then accelerates. I'm excited to see what he can do and think he would have gotten some reps as a true freshman last season had he been healthy.

Check back tomorrow for number 32 on the player countdown. Tomorrow also marks the first day of practice!
