Wake Forest Player Countdown: No. 35 QB Kevin Sousa

Could the redshirt junior be the Deacs' starting quarterback?

Dean Shore

Coming in at number 35 on our player countdown is quarterback Kevin Sousa. Sousa is a redshirt junior, who is out of Lake Nona High School in Orlando, Florida. He was the 23rd best dual-threat quarterback in the 2011 recruiting class, according to Rivals.com. Sousa chose Wake Forest over offers from Michigan and Miami.

Sousa had a strong spring game. While he completed just 50% of his passes for 178 yards, he did rush for 78 yards on just nine carries. It's my opinion that he has passed Tyler Cameron on the depth chart. Sousa could very well end up being our starting quarterback, and if he is then he would obviously deserve to be much higher on the list. As it stands, I believe either freshman Travis Smith or freshman John Wolford will be the starting quarterback. If Sousa does start, it will be because of his scrambling ability, and ability to make plays when the original play breaks down. It would also be a neat story if Sousa started, given that he was highly touted out of high school, converted to wide receiver, and then would have concerted back to quarterback after the coaching change.

Did I just hedge? Absolutely, but this is one of the most difficult races to predict. The only person returning was underwhelming while he was in, although they were against difficult teams in tough situations. The other returner has not played the position in two seasons. Then you have two incoming freshman, who earned similar accolades in high school. This is clearly the position battle we'll be paying the most attention to as camp begins on Friday.

Check back tomorrow for number 34.
