Wake Forest Player Countdown: No. 70 Linebacker Kalin McNeil

Back to a defensive player on the countdown.

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

Coming in at number 70 on our list is freshman Kalin McNeil. McNeil is an outside linebacker/rover out of Northeast Guilford in Mcleansville, North Carolina. He was the 100th best outside linebacker and a consensus 3-star in the 2014 recruiting class according to 247's composite rankings. McNeil originally committed to Wake Forest last summer and chose the Deacs over East Carolina and Elon.

McNeil played a little bit of everything for his high school team. He was listed as a defensive end/outside linebacker, but his high school film also shows him dropping into coverage and playing the safety/rover position. At 190 pounds, he's too small to play the "drop" position in Wake's 4-2-5 defense, so he should be a candidate for an outside linebacker/rover position. Junior Hunter Williams is currently slated as the starting rover, and incoming freshman Zack Wary is an excellent candidate to be a backup, or even compete for the starting position. If McNeil is slotted as an outside linebacker, then I expect will be behind at least four other players (Teddy Matthews, Steve Donatell, Jaboree Williams & Lance Virgile) for playing time. McNeil may contribute some on special teams, but I expect this to be a redshirt season.

Check back tomorrow to find out who is number 69 on the countdown.
