Wake Forest Opens Spring Practice

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons kicked off spring practice today. What were some of the highlights?

Jared Wickerham

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons' football team had their first spring practice on Tuesday afternoon, which was in anything but spring weather.

This was the first practice of the Dave Clawson era and there was high energy and efficiency. The coaches really seemed to get the most out of their 2 hours and 10 minutes with the players. A strong portion of practice was dedicated to installing systems and continuing to get the players to understand their "core offense" and schemes as coach Clawson described in this interview with ESPN.

Sophomore Johnny Armstrong was frequently targeted and should be very productive this season. The same can be said for Orville Reynolds, who will be moving from flanker back to running back this season. At the quarterback position, both Tyler Cameron and Kevin Sousa displayed solid athleticism.

A few additional observations:

- Zachary Allen has moved from linebacker to defensive end

-Wendell Dunn has also moved from linebacker to defensive end

These moves make sense given the loss of three starting defensive linemen due to graduation as well as the 2013 recruiting class bringing in five linebackers.

Finally, I noticed that neither linebacker Kevis Jones nor tight end Daniel Vogelsang were listed on the spring football roster. Additionally I did not see them on the practice field.
