Wake Forest forward Dearica Hamby won Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors Monday, per a release from the conference office. Hamby has produced 5 double-doubles in a row for the Demon Deacons, and 16 for the season thus far. Hamby scored 29 points and grabbed 18 boards in a road win over Clemson last Sunday, then scored 22 more points with 11 rebounds in a home loss to North Carolina. She capped off her week by scoring 21 points and snatching 16 rebounds in the Deacs' 56-50 come-from-behind victory Sunday over Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
Hamby is enjoying a breakthrough season after spending 2012-2013 deferring to a senior-laden Demon Deacon team that included prolific scorer Lakevia Boykin and center Sandra Garcia. Now a junior, Hamby is called upon to anchor a young Wake Forest team along with senior point guard Chelsea Douglas (who has also earned Player of the Week honors this season).
Next up for the Demon Deacons is a visit Thursday night from Virginia, fresh off their upset victory over highly-ranked Maryland.
