Dave Clawson said in his introductory press conference that putting together his football staff was vitally important and today he named three more coaches.
Warren Belin, will be retained as linebackers coach and will be back for his second season with the Demon Deacons. Belin played for the Deacs from 1987-1990 and has more than 20 years of coaching experience. Belin had stints with Georgia and Vanderbilt in addition to the Carolina Panthers where he helped coach 2012 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Luke Kuechly. Wake Forest has a lot of young linebackers on the roster, and I believe this was an excellent decision to retain Coach Belin.
Derrick Jackson will also be retained as secondary coach. Last year he helped coach a Demon Deacons' secondary which was top 50 nationally in pass defense and the unit will return three starters in freshman all-american Ryan Janvion as well as seniors Kevin Johnson and Merrill Noel. Prior to joining Wake Forest, Jackson coached at schools such as Michigan State and Syracuse, where he was a co-defensive coordinator. The secondary clearly was not an issue for Wake Forest last season and it appears that Jackson deserved to be retained.
Dave Cohen will coach the defensive line for the Demon Deacons and he is being brought in from Rutgers University where he served as defensive coordinator in 2013. Cohen has head coaching experience at Hofstra and was also the defensive coordinator at Delaware in 2003 when the Blue Hens won the FCS National Championship. Cohen coached with Dave Clawson at Albany in 1989 and 1990 and when Clawson became the head coach of Fordham in 1999, he brought Cohen in to be his defensive coordinator. Cohen will take over a unit that is young, but has some promising prospects in James Looney and Tylor Harris.
