Game recap in haiku: Terps best Deacs, 19-14

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Just two awful teams
Deacs missed opportunities
Season is over

I honestly don't think this team will win another game all year. I started to type that the Terps topped the Deacs but I hesitate to even call it that. Both of these teams were so bad today, there wasn't a winner, there was just a worse loser. I am absolutely sickened by what I saw on that field today, and everyone takes responsibility. Two missed field goals. That would've won us the game. A fourth down stop when the Deacs were inches from the end zone. That would've won us the game. A fumble (admittedly questionable) when the Deacs were somewhere in the neighborhood of the Maryland 30. That could have won us the game. A fumble on a kickoff. The Deacs honestly looked like the dominant team in execution for probably 90% of the first three and a half quarters (maybe less, but not by much), but in the end it didn't matter. They left the win on the field.

To make matters even worse, Wake's already patchwork offensive line suffered a key loss in the form of Antonio Ford. This team will not go to a bowl despite having an almost laughably favorable schedule. I don't know if I personally can think of any more infuriating Wake squad in my admittedly (comparatively) limited exposure, because the team is capable of making good plays, and there are absolutely talented players on the team. They just don't rise to the occasion, with (somehow) the exception of the UNC game. I just don't understand it.

I don't want to say that I don't love our players, because I do. They're our family. Heck, I don't even want any coach's head on a platter. Maybe it's just because I don't have the energy for it anymore, but this team, sadly, just shows a lack of heart. I don't want to dog the team too bad because I know they're hurting and frustrated, probably more than we are. But I'm going to call it like I see it. Tanner Price was something like 1-10 in the fourth quarter. The offense had two chances to win it in the fourth quarter and just did absolutely nothing with either opportunity. Receivers were dropping passes all over the place. At times the defense did well, but then on other plays (key ones, unfortunately) there were more missed tackles than I could count.

I honestly think we're just playing for pride now. This is brutal. The hilariously sad thing is that I honestly believe that this footballl team is going to somehow manage to make even a mediocre basketball season palatable. I love my school and I love my team. I just wish they made it easier.
