Deacon Dump 1/20: Facing the Heels

Time to get up. I look forward to playing Duke every year, but there's no game I look forward to more than whenever we play UNC. And tonight's matchup has huge implications for both squads. The Heels are stumbling and looking for a chance to stop the bleeding at home. Wake, on the other hand, is coming off a tough, physical loss to Duke and has lost two of three dating back to the Miami game. So, naturally, we're here with all kinds of links to hype up the game.

Oh yeah, and the ACC is insane--BC beating Miami, why not?

Status of Davis 'limited at best' for Wake Forest
"The day before Virginia Tech, Marcus (Ginyard) was limited but looked great and jumped right in and felt good and was able to go," Williams said. "The game at Charleston, Will Graves and Marcus were both limited, and neither one played. I'd like to give you a better answer, but I don't know."

5. Wake Forest wins school’s first ACC title since 1970. In 2006, unheralded Wake Forest -- the smallest school in the BCS -- claimed its second ACC title and first in 37 years with a 9-6 win over Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game in Jacksonville, Fla. Wake Forest won a school-record 11 games and became the first ACC team to go 6-0 on the road.

"He's a courageous kid who tries to put the team on his back and carry them," Gaudio said. "But he has to make sure that he has vision when he has the basketball of some of our other guys on the floor. What we talked about was trusting his teammates a little bit more."

"It was like a football game," Gaudio said afterward. "The game’s getting incredibly physical. It’s unbelievable. I’ve been to see a couple of NBA games, and I don’t think it’s as physical as it was tonight."

Deacons' Stewart will shoot away
"I believe with all my heart that I'm a big-time player," he said. "I have the utmost confidence in my shot. "And in overtime (against Maryland), I knew I hadn't scored any points in regulation. But good shooters can't let that stop them from shooting. I just sucked it up, and I felt like my teammates needed me and they trusted me to shoot. You just take shots.

Heels big men must play bigger against Deacons - CharlotteObserver.com
North Carolina coach Roy Williams said it was both impressive and nerve-wracking, watching the big men for Duke and Wake Forest butt heads (and everything else) on television Sunday night. "I just kept seeing (Chas) McFarland tip it in, and Miles and Mason (Plumlee) and (Kyle) Singler getting back and dunking it in," he said. "It was sort of scary watching that part of it, because we haven't, ourselves, dominated the backboards against another big team."

Whenever he touches the basketball inside, they bang him around in a concerted effort to thwart his rhythm. Travis McKie just smiles and goes about his business. The Wake Forest-bound John Marshall High School senior plays with such a love for the game that he can block out the noise, overcome the double teams, and allow the game to come to him.

Ginyard carrying big load for UNC
"At the end of the day, we all know that we need to change," Ginyard said. "I'm just trying to find a way to do it. "Obviously, it's a team effort for sure, but there's no question that I do feel a little responsibility to be that leader and try to get the team headed in the right direction."

Others calling, but QB Eddie Sullivan still committed to Wake Forest as grey-shirt | High School Buzz
Sullivan committed to Wake Forest in early August, but no player is locked into a school until he signs a national letter of intent. The first day seniors can sign is Feb. 3, national signing day. "Eddie is still committed to Wake Forest, but he’s looking around at other places," Byars said. "I tell kids to take their visits. Until you sign, look at your options."

The physical play also took its toll on senior guard Ishmael Smith, who fouled out with seven points on 3-of-12 shooting. Smith averaged 17.0 points on 43.8 percent from the field in his previous four games. "You know what, that kid, man he plays hard," Gaudio said. "I don't have any problems with his numbers because that kid plays with a big heart."

"They certainly out-executed us," said Bennett, when asked about UNCW’s comeback, which was spurred by 3-point shooting, "and we were casual. I think we just kind of lost our way." On Saturday, Virginia plays at Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons also employ the "pack-line" approach, which should make for an interesting duel.

ACC Now - UNC's Davis may miss Wake game | newsobserver.com blogs
Davis' availability for Wednesday night's game against Wake Forest will be a game-time decision, Williams added. "Some guys that are limited -- the day before Virginia Tech, Marcus [Ginyard] was limited, but looked great and jumped right in and felt good, was able to go," Williams said. "The game before that, Charleston, Will Graves and Marcus were limited, and neither one played. ... So I just don't know [if Davis will play]."
