Deacon Dump 1/15: A mixed bag

A wide variety of links today, including the story on Nikita now that Dino can talk about it, some football recruiting updates, a great day for Wake soccer and of course some basketball stuff too.  Some nice reading that should be a good way to help speed up time at work as you try to make it to a very entertaining sports weekend.

Also, if you can make it to the Charlotte area tonight, West Charlotte and J.T. Terrell will take on Marquis Rankin and Vance.  This is definitely one that will be entertaining and worth the $5 admission charge.

I love that photo.

My Take on Wake - No Perspective, No Joy |
So I guess the two things I see missing from so many of these arguments are perspective and joy. It’s so easy to forget that the other guy has his problems too. Even a Hall of Fame Coach such as Roy Williams, just a half season removed from a national championship, finds himself coaching a North Carolina team that has played its way squarely on to the bubble. And if there’s no joy in winning, then what is the point of caring one way or the other?

Georgetown transfer starts practicing at Wake Forest, but he must sit out awhile
"We're going to graduate four seniors who are veterans, and he brings a little more experience to the table when he's eligible to play next December," Gaudio said. "That's a concern. "Now we weren't just going to take anybody. We wanted to make sure that we were taking somebody who could come in and possibly impact the program -- and I think he can."

Nikita Mescheriakov - The Jay Leno Show. Both had one shining moment. Nikita hit those threes against Syracuse his sophomore year. Jay had Kanye West on after the Taylor Swift scandal in his first week, artificially spiking ratings. Both flamed out pretty spectacularly - Nikita with his season ending shot over the backboard against St. Johns and Jay with stabbing Conan O'Brien right in the back. Both suck a lot. I hate both. Nikita is transferring to Wake Forest, Jay is moving to 11:35. Even in new surroundings, both will continue to suck a lot and I will continue to hate both.

Waters’ commitment fills an enormous need in the Scarlet Knights’ recruiting class. Rutgers needed a safety, and Waters is the first member of the 2010 class to commit who will stay at that position. "They have good academics, a good engineering program, which I’m looking into,’’ Waters said. "They are up and coming and I want to be a part of that.’’ Waters took an official visit in early December, and followed it with trips to Wake Forest and California. He originally planned to make a decision before the holidays, but that time passed and he remained undecided.

Fire takes Wake Forest midfielder in MLS draft - Chicago Breaking Sports

Four Deacs go in first round
"Coach Jay just does such a great job of developing the players, and he knows what it takes to make each of us better," da Luz said. "So having so many players taken in the draft just shows what kind of program we have." Vidovich said: "It's a tremendous statement for our program and the young men that Wake Forest has been able to attract. I'm just excited for them to have the opportunity to pursue their professional ambitions, and I want to wish them the best of luck."

Revs ride Wake -
"I was hoping that they needed a forward and I know they like Wake Forest guys," Schilawski said after the Revs selected him with the ninth overall pick. "I’ve heard things about them (being interested) in the past, but I hadn’t heard too much about them recently. I’m very excited."
